Friday ISight Miss Shellby Rich Wins Coveted “Miss Artes Modernes 1974” Title ---hv James Peeler _] Post Staff W riter "Welcome to My World" w as the theme of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's 1974 Artes Modernes Pageant last Friday night at Charlotte's Civic Cen ter! Approximately 500 persons attended the Pageant which culminated six months of activities for the II young ladies vying for the title of Miss Artes Modernes-1974. This year the coveted title went to Miss Shellby Rich, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. M. 1- Rich. The Charlotte Coun try Day student was escorted by Tony Moore. First runner-up at the .annual affair was Cassandra Washington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hercules Washing ton. The West Charlotte High School student was escorted by Lester Wallace. ~ ..The Second Runner-up spot was filled by Ingrid Renee Sullivan, an East Mecklen burg High School student who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Sullivan. She was escorted by John Sullivan. .. The eight other young ladies participating in this year's Artes Moderne Pageant were: Denisa Louise Able, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Able. She is a student at West Char lotte High School and was escorted by Wilbert Redfern. . .Gena Renee Amos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion O. Amos. Gena is a student at Independence High School who was escorted by James Hardy. ..Cassandra Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Davis. Cassandra is a student at West Mecklenburg High School and was escorted by Andre Springs. ..Tammy Haygood. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hay good. Ivey is a student at Myers l*ark High School and was fscorted by Major Ingram. Angelia Denise Kush, laughter of Mr. and Mrs. rhomas Kush. She is a student it Olympic High School. Since beginning with an wi ii-nuumn session at Memor ial I'nited Presbyterian .Church in June, the li Artes Moderne contestants have participated in a Swim Party Sleep-In at the McCrorey Branch Y.MCA. a Charm Session conducted by Mrs. Mabel I.atimore at Greenville Neighborhood Center, a Bow l arama at Freedom l.anes. an Ice Foley at the Polar Palace Bink. and Mother Daughter l.uncheon at the McCrorey Branch Y.MCA. The Queen and her Court were afforded some excellent entertainment by a Karate (exhibition put on* by Tony Gore and Michael Brown of Johnson C. Smith and the MK'rorey Branch Y.M.C.A.; the Arobic Dancers from East Mecklenburg High School and director Ms. Mary Alford; and a -Classical Ballet by the Charlotte Regional Ballet Company under the direction of (»av Porter and chore grapher Henrv Danton. ...Mrs. Roberta Thompkins won the first door price of a $200 Money Tree. ..Music for the dance which followed the formal program was provided the HEAT Band, managed and directed by Jack Benson. McColl Named To Development Council A local bank president has been appointed to the. 11 member State Community and Economic Development Council by Governor Jim liolshouser. Hugh L. McColl, Jr., is an at-large member from the Piedmont region and is the president of North Carolina National Bank. : The-Council cieated by the— General Assembly during the 1974 session, will advise the Secretary of Natural and Economic Resources about economic issues, including travel promotion. .. The council will hold its first meeting and swearing-in ceremonies at 9 a.m. on Fri day at Raleigh's Royal Villa. Robert G. Shaw of Greens boro will be chairman of the council.
