FRESHMAN Lew Massey ...Has Come A Long Ways UNCC Fabulous Rookie Named “Cager Of Week” by James Cuthbertson Post Staff Writer .."As a freshman, he's come along fast," said coach Bill Foster of the UNCC 49ers in describing this week’s basket ball player of the week, Law rence "Lew” Massey. .."He's averaging ten points per game and is holding his own with our starters Geoff Bommer, Cedric Maxwell and John Heath. He’s a fine offen sive player, but has a lot to learn on defense," Foster con tinued. . .“And defense is the name of the game in college. There's a good possibilty that he will be starting before the season is over.” .."He’s got a bright future and figures prominently in our plans over the next four years," he said. ..Foster' compared the six foot six inch forward who graduated from Charlotte's South Mecklenburg High School to Robert Blue, the all-time leading scorer for the 49ers. His high school coach compares him to former Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill great Bobby Jones and present UNC sophomore Walter Davis who just • happens to be Lew’s Uncle. ..The 1974 Charlotte-Meck lenburg Basketball Player of the Year who scored 17 points in last summer's.North Caro lina Fast-West All-Star game was recruited heavily by UNC, South Carolina, Temple and Florida. U.' h V Hlfl iho IQ1 nnntwl rtnn „-- - ,-n* — graphy major select UNCC? ..‘‘I thought maybe I'd get a chance to play a lot of varsity hall and I liked the-School. It’s got a good basketball pro gram.” said the 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. I.awrence Massey, Sr. of P.O. Box 234 Pineville, N. C. ..Massey has played in all five games that the I9ers who are 4 and 1 have won, scoring 53 points for an average of II points per game. /. In Monday's 100 to f>0 victory over the College of Charleston, he scored 14 points in 15 minutes, a point per minute. . He is shooting 54 per cent from the floor and 61 per cent from the charity line. . In the Centenary opener in the Hall of Fame tournament Thanksgiving weekend in Springfield. Massachussetts. Massey showed poise as he teamed with George Jackson and Bob Ball to convert three bonus attempts for six points to knott the score 63 all with a minute left. At the 2:43 mark UNCC was trailing hy six point* He was the third high est scorer in the game with nine points. . .The next night, he scored 10 in an 85 to 57 romp over the I'nlversity of Massachussetts which gave the 49ers the tournament championship. The 49ers who went 22 and I last year will need Massey’s help as they face an even tougher schedule this year that includes North Carolina State. Boston University. Florida, and the All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City. ..Massey said that he has never considered himself as a freshman and always con sidered himself" as being as good as the rest of the guys.” ..He contemplates a success ful season for the team and is currently sandwiching ball games and practices in be tween 19 hours of course work in the Afro-American block of the Black Studies program. .."We practice usually every day from 2:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. I mostly play defense because I'm presently a second stringer," said Massey who added that college ball is different from high school in that in college, "you have the best of the high school players playing." . .“When we first played in the Green-White game. I had the wrong concept of college ball. It's not that rough but the emphasis is on defense in college compared to offense in high school.” ..When he's not playing he relaxes to the sounds of his favorite performer Issac Hayes. .."I like soul music, either slow or fast." smiled the 49ers prize recruit. ..When Massey jells, the 49ers may equal last year’s record-setting performance in which, they finished first in NCAA Division 1 in average scoring margin (20.8 points per game margin), sixth in team offense with 90.2 points per game, fifth in field goal percentage with 5I.I percent, and eighth in won-lost percent age. winning 22 of 26 games for .846 percent. Heartbreak Corner Post Office Is Graveyard Of Poorly Wrapped Gifts ..The Postal Ser\ice's dead letter offices have lesser known brethren which, during the Christmas holiday season, are known in parts of the the country as "heartbreak ft corner. -.."Hearlhreak corner" is a section of the Claims and In quiry Office—that section where undeliverable holiday packages with improper addresses or torn labels and wrappings are held while postal employees search for clues that will enable them to complete delivery. The first "corner" was so christened by the Detroit . tieneral Post Offire Ip when Emile Asa. Director of Support, noticed the continu % ally mounting stacks of un deliverable toys and gifts and mentioned the heartbreak it would cause around the Christmas tree when presents so carefully selected did not arrive. ..From that time on. "heart break corner" has kept the 'UTlWg. Lilt year: afterBOdays - on the corner's shelf. IS.000 unclaimed parcels made their way to the auction block of the dead letter branch in v. nicago. But due to diligence of those working in "heartbreak corner." not all are victims of this fate. In 1973. more than 30.000 packages reached heartbreak corner with addresses that made them tnidellieiabic. but fmtunateiv— had sufficient return identi fication to route them back to their senders. ■ ..Since the formal existence j of heartbreak corner, the J number of packages ending up J on the Detroit shelf has been J reduced. Asa attributes this to the enthusiastic response each year from the media in send ing crews to film or tape descriptions of the more un common items--anything from a stuffed deer's head to an African relic. On—occasion— people have recognized an un delivered gift and upon ade quate proof of ownership, re trieved it. .."The cooperation of the media in alerting the public to . the ways in which mailers can avoid having a package end up in the corner has been a major factor in the reduction." Asa said. _. .One of the prime reasons for 1 a gift not- making it to the intended person is improper wrapping. To assist the public in mailing procedures, the l'. S. Postal Service fibs a-bro chure. Packaging for Mailing, which is a\ailable at no cost in many post offices or by mail from Consumer Product Infnr. niation. Pueblo. Colorado 81009. As a final precaution for mailing this or any season. Asa suggests including the name and address of the send er. recipient and a list of contents 'On a sheet of paper inside the package. This should greatly reduce its chances of landing In heart break corner if it should be- - come unwrapped in transit. The students will be honored by a luncheon at the City Club on December 19 hosted by W. A. Bowen. Senior Vice President of Wachovia.
