Sympony Orchestra Joseph Richmond Johnson, 67, formerly of Char lotte died Tuesday Dec. 2 in St. Vincent Hospital. Bridgeport after a lingering illness. . .Funeral services for the dis tinquished musician were held Friday Dec. 7 at Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport, Connecticut. He was buried in Assumption Cemetery in Greens Farms, Conn. He had been a resident of Westport, Conn, for the last 12 years.. .. Born in Charlotte, he is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Johnson. He graduated from Second Ward High School and was a member of •Ibrnrztrr fintptst C^hutch. lie graduated from Howard Uni versity where he was concert master of the University Symphony Orchestra. He also appeared with the Howard University Glee Club in Wash ington in a special program for the former President and Mrs. Franklin d. Koosevelt. ' He was appointed assistant of the National Opera Com pany and had served on the ‘faculties of Oillard-University in New Orleans. Florida A and M University and Yale Uni versity w here he received his masters degree in music, in 1967. ..lie 'was the current presi dent of the Connecticut Delta Iota Sigma Chapter and the principal pla\er in the Nor walk. Conn. Symphony. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity-and Sauga tuck Congregational Church. ..lie is survived by his wife; one sister. Ms. Mary Grace of charlotte; two nieces. Mrs. Mable H. Latimer. Mrs. and Mrs. Alice II. Central Piedmont Community College and local businesses, commer cial. financial and industrial firms. ..The "Youth In Business In tern Piogram" is a project of the Office of Minority Busi ness Enterprise and the U. S. Department of Commerce. Dr. Allan Palmer, chairman of the program and the Dean of the School of Business Administration at L'NCC. said the program now in its third year and a large number of students have been placed in jobs. .He said the program is vtriutted committees which will recruit jobs, recruit" •tudents and coordinate the program with high school counselors. ..Barbara Werner, chairman of the management resource department of Cameron Financial Corp. is the head of the job development committee. ..The objective of that comittee is to secure committ ments from the business firms to hire minority students while they are attending college, and provide them with special opportunities for contact with the business sector, business operations orientation, career preparation counseling, specific skills developement and training, vacation or part time employment, meaningful work experience and con sideration for permanent employment upon college graduation. miIaB~Ttdwell. commercial banking officer at Wachovia Bank is the chairman of the , student recruitment committee. ..
