Duke Athlete Is Withers’ s » House Guest The Claude Withers’ of 2910 Burbank Drive have had a professional football prospect tnd All Atlantic Coast Confer ence and North Carolina State 'Fencing Champion as a house 'guest for the past week. I. James Dennis Turner, a senior history major at Duke University is a friend of the Withers' daughter. Claudia, J*ho is a Duke graduate now working at The Charlotte Observer. £ In February, the Withers' ^laughter, will be attending the .institute for Para-legal Train ing in Philadelphia. i. Turner is anticipating a pro fessional football contract. He played defensive tackle for the Blue Devils who went six and five. He will be returning to Duke this week. Nes bitt, was the founder of the WHM Society's : Young Wo men's Home and Foreign Mission). lop 1 hree Contestants Williams Named “Mr. Purple Cross” The Purple Cross Nursing L'nit. an auxiliary of The Improved Benevolent Pro tective Order Of Elks Of The World, held its 1th Annual Purple Cross Dance last Saturday night. January 1th. from 10 until 2 a m., at the National Guard Armory. .The highlight of the annual pay-dance pffair was the Crowning of "Mr. Purple Cross.” ..This year four contestants, Hosea Williams. James Eloyd. Edward Hogue, and Adolphus Williams, competed for the crown by seeking to raise the highest amount of money for the Purple Cross’s Nursing Scholarship Fund and Hosea Williams was named the winner and crowned during intermission ceremonies. Approximately 350 people paid 13.00 to witness the crowning and dance to the music of The Zuauillis Band. Pass State President Emer itus and Past Grand Exalted Ruler Sherwood T. Enloe of Shelby, N. C. addressed the gathering as did Lem Long. Jr.. North Carolina State Association of Elks President. . The officers of the 10-mem ber. 6-year-old Charlotte ^Chapter of the Purple Cross Nursing L’nit are: Florence Burke, President; Burline McClain, Vice-President; Dorothy McMurray, Secre tary, Mr. Dolphtis Williams.
