Virginia State Moves Into First
Place Tie With Winston -Salem State

HAMPTON, VA...As the
CIAA football season passes
the mid point, Winston-Salem
continues in a first place tie in
the conference standings as
they downed Livingstone 17 -
9.
Cornelius Washington, who
leads the conference in inter
ceptions had two intercep
tions, 22 tackles, recovered a
fumble and knocked down a
pass to lead the Rams defense

rushed for 227 yards and helc
Livingstone to only 59. Neithei
team was able to score in th<
first quarter but Livingitonc
scored first in the seconc
period on a field goal and did
not score again until late in the
fourth quarter. Winston-Sa
lem’s first score came after
recovering a fumble in the
second quarter. They scored
‘ again before the end of the
second quarter and lead at the
half, 14 - 3.
Virginia state unleashed
George Leonard, who rushed
16 times for 195 yards and
scored three touchdowns as
the Trojans blitzed Shaw 52 - 6.
Virginia State remains unde
feated in conference play and
is tied for the lead with Win
ston-Salem. The Trojans accu
mulated 444 yards total offen
se and held Shaw to 207.
Linwood Hardy intercepted
three passes, one for 34 yards
and a touchdown and another
for 79 yards which set up
another score. Freshman run
ning back Terry Huston car
ried the ball to times for 50
yards and scored one touch
down.

play a high powered offense
and a stingy defense as they
humbled winless Elizabeth Ci
ty 21 - 6. Sophomore flanker
Malcolm Barnwell scored Un
ion’s first two touchdowns, one
on a 11 yard run and another
on a 47 yard pass reception.
Union’s other scores came
when defensive end Plummer
Bullock recovered a midair
fumble and galloped 38 yards
for the score. Bullock also had
5 tackles, one quarterback

Philander Carter took a kick

Hampton’s scores. Hampton
was penalized 188 yards and
Bowie State had 114 yards
called in penalties. Five of
Hampton’s penalties were for
roughing the kicker.
Norfolk State threw four
interceptions in the first half

sion II leaders, South Carolina
State, 48 - 6. The Golden Bulls
were only able to gain 90 yards
rushing. South Carolina State,
running the veer, rushed for
417 yards and had 14 first
downs. Johnson C. Smith hit
on oiuy j oi zb pass attempts.
Fayetteville State, who was
idle last weekend, came close
to shutting out St. Paul’s 24 - 2.
After a 10 - 0 half-time lead the
Broncos came back to score in
each of the second half peri
ods. Chris Barfield was the
Broncos leading rusher with
64 yards. This game was the
Schlitz Game of the Week.
Watches were won by Fayette
ville State’s offensive line
man, Burnis Travis for his
outstanding play and by Ricky
Furline, the defensive line
man-linebacker.

Littlejohn Captures Third Place In City Meet

ish playing school teacher who
has been playing great golf
this season, finished third in
the City Amateur golf tour
nament here last week
The Cochrane Junior High
head football coach shot 76-70
at Raintree Country Club's
South course Friday and Sat
urday and wound up with a 73
at Pawtucket Golf Club Sun
day to finish behind David
Kiser, the winner, and Gabe
Hill, who came in second.
"I’m surprised that I played
well enough to finish as high
as I did," Littlejohn said
Monday morning. "I have
experienced a slump that has

my game somewhat below
par. I haven't played lately."
He, however, played well
enough in the city's most
prestigious golf meet to win a
gift certificate and he will not
have to qualify for future City
Amateur Golf tournaments.
A graduate of Johnson C.
Smith University, Littlejohn
has won two tournaments.this
year and has placed no lower
than third in four others. He
paired with Haywood Steven
son to win the popular Par
Buster 4-Ball Tournament and
he was the best golfer in the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg
School Teachers Tournament.

quarterback said. "I believe I
should be playing much bet
ter. It’s something I’ll have to
work on."
The other black golfers who
played well in the city meet
were Tippy Glover, Haywood
Stevenson, Andre Springs,
Gardner Brown and Harry
Gray.
Glover, an official at Cedar
wood Golf Course, shot 230
with rounds of 79, 75, 76, to
finish 10th in the champion
ship flight. Stevenson placed
fourth in the second flight with
237, having shot 81-79-77.

came in ninth with rounds of
79-81-81 for a 54-hole total of
241 Springs carded 239, with
rounds of 80-83-76, to tie for
third place with Ted Graham
Jr. and Gardner Brown, a
JCSU player, finished fifth in
the fourth flight with 254.
Brown posted an 83 Friday,
followed with an 87 Saturday
and finished with an 84 Sunday
afternoon.
