Leroy “Pop" Miller, a tall, relaxed man with a wide smile and a charming way with people, told us, “I'm concern ed about attendance and this is an opportunity to do some thing specific about it. I want to do a comparative study and I’m working on a form to gather the necessary data. I want to know why students stay out of school." At this point it appears to me that the absenteeism rate among so phomores is roughly three times that of seniors and I want to find out why so I can try to tell these sophomores something to help them. V Darryl Hood gg Joins U. S. Air Force Darryl B. Hood, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Hood, of 1327 Orvis Street, Charlotte, has enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Airman Hood, a 1977 gradu ate of Garinger High School, joined under the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP), which allows him to accumulate time in the Air Force Reserve until he enters active duty on October 12, 1977. Sergeant Lamar Jackson, Air Force recruiter in Char lotte, stated that Airman Hood successfully completed a se ries of tests which qualified him for the security specialist field of training. Young Democrats To Hear Carl Stewart Carl Stewart, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Re presentatives will speak to the Young Democrats of Meck lenburg County at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, October 18, at the Excelsior Club which is located at 921 Beatties Ford Road. Mr. Stewart is a practicing attorney from Gastonia and will be the first House Speaker to serve two successive terms as Speaker. Dr. Ralph Tyler, nationally known author, educator, con sultant and evaluator will be the keynote speaker on Thurs day, October 13, 9 p.m. in the Omni Foyer at Sheraton Cen ter. Dr. Tyler has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ohio State University and the University of Chicago. He will discuss competency-based testing and the decline in Scholastic Aptit tude Test (SAT) scores. During the workshop, each principal outlined a major problem area in which to improve leadership skills. Ci ther intercity visits will be held throughout the remaind er of the school year for principals to learn about other school systems and share ex periences. Each city has seven partici pants including five princi pals, a local college coordi nator and a school system coordinator. Local high school principals selected as Danforth fellows are: H.L. Hawkins, Indepen dence; Joe Hunt, North Meck lenburg; Leroy Miller, East Mecklenburg; Don Rodgers, Harding; and R. Frank Roz ze"«i Myers Park. Dr. William C. Self, former CMS superintendent and now assistant to the dean and professor of education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the local college coordinator. A native of Salisbury, Miller graduated from A&T State University, spent four years in service, then received his masters degree from Penn State in 1950. “I started work on my Ph.D. but 1 met this pretty little girl and married her and never did complete it,” he laughed. The "pretty little girl” he refers to is the former Sadie Moragne of Bordeaux, S.C., a teacher in the Charlotte-Meck lenburg system. They have one son, Skip, attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hawkins who taught at West Charlotte was chairman of the math department before suc ceeding Miller as assistant principal, was named princi pal of Independence three years ago. He graduated from Livingstone College and has an M.A. from Michigan State University and a M.Ed. from tko University of North Caro- , liha - Charlotte. "Attendance is my concern, also,” he said. “I’m concerned with how much absenteeism there is before a youngster reaches the age of sixteen, then how many of those same young sters we lose after they pass the mandatory attendance age. I’d also like to know how many of them come back to school in the adult education program.” He, too. is in the preliminary stages of data gathering and didn’t wish to hazard any guesses as the reasons why of the phenome non of absenteeism. “I’m only sure that a student can’t learn if they’re not in the classroom and I'd like to get to the bottom of the situation and see if there isn’t something con crete that can be done about the problem,” he concluded.
