Campus Capers I Dianne importance Of Good Education many times people have come to me and asked me what reasons did I have for going to Johnson C. Smith University. After submitting various reasonings I included that Smith is a black institu tion, and to me black institu tions are the backbones of the education of a great majority of our black population. Educating our blacks is of utmost concern for a success ful black environment. The world in which we live in has been stereotyped as being the white man’s world. It is the white man who is on the top as to political, social, as well as economical power. It is the white man’s platform that upholds the nation’s jobs and enterprises. But why is the world situated in this way? Because of the improper edu cation of the larger mass of our black population. We blacks on a whole poss -- 1VUI u Ui TflUlCO because we sometimes feel that no matter how we acti vate ourselves, the output of our capabilities rates less than the performance of the white man. It is through education that will help us break away from this feeling of inferiority, when really there is no need to fear a man whose mere differ ence is the color of his skin. We blacks should know the basics of how the government is run, for the basics must be comprehensible before the term in us is reached. We can understand the basics by at tending schools and colleges and upgrading our minds. We can enrich our vocabulary, but in such a way that we need not have to utter words and phrases that will serve as support hoisery for our act ions. For if we seek to be like the white man being a student of words, then we may be graduates possessing a me morization of words, and a knowledge of nothing. Many of us blacks should value education as a business asset, and not so much as an entrance into the joy of intel lectual experience or ac quaintance with the best that has been said and done in the past. We should value it not so much as an experience, but as a tool. We blacks realize that the world is like that of a sport, full of competition. Proper education helps us to prepare ourselves for this competition that we may end up as first place winners. However, this competition-makes a division point for superiority and infe riority. But it is through true » Black education that makes up for this inequality; the inequality of individuality, the inequality of success; and the glorious inequality of talent and of genius. However, sacrifices must be made in order that proper education be obtained. We DiacKs must first abandon our feelings of prejudices and hat red and thus replace them with feelings of pride and res pect, the basic factors needed for our movement. We must abandon our acts of laziness and inconsistencies for those of ideals, efforts, scholarships and philosophical continuity. We must invest our monies in those riches that will serve for lifetime profits, such as the need for freedom, power and possession. Entertainment time must sometimes be sa crificed for time for invention, discovery, as well as strategy. For education alone can con duct us to that enjoyment which is, at once, best in quality, and infinite in quanti ty. Education is very impor tant, especially that which is obtained from many of our black institutions. It is through education that we blacks can obtain a portrait showing the realization of our lives, as to where we’ve been, where we are, and where we are going.
