YWCA Launches New Program The Charlotte YWCA has launched a new program to help young women 16 to 18 years old to adjust to adult life while living away from home The program, which is fun ded by United Community Services, is called “Youth Seeking Self-Sufficiency." It offers up to six months resi dence at the Y’s Park Road facility, plus counseling and recreational and social out lets, so that the women may continue their high school stu dies or seek employment. Project director Katherine Mom and orocram director Paula Brown have planned a life skills development pro gram featuring group sessions in the following areas: Money Management - esta blishing individual checking accounts, establishing a per sonal budget, keeping daily account of expenditures. Educational Planning - plans to meet graduation re quirements, requirements for G.E.D., plans beyond high school. Vocational planning - docu ments for employment, Ca reer Awareness and Explora . tion, How to get a Job. Personal Hygiene - hair and skin care, make-up, dental care, feminine hygiene. Recreation and Social Out lets - cook-outs, sports, exhi bits, festivals. Peer Support Development - interpersonal Communica tion, identifying and dealing with emotions and feelings, awareness of self and others. monties, Time Manage ment - contracting, setting goals, clarification of values. The program will be on a continuing basis, starting with up to eight women who have been referred to the project and accepted. Each applicant will be screened by the project director. The program will be extended to 16 women as the need arises, and as women complete the program they will be replaced by new appli cants. Basic guidelines for partici pating in the project are: 1. The participant, her family or referring agency must be responsible for room and board, medical or dental fees. Room and board for the initial period have been set at $40 per week. 2. Participant must be enroll ed in an educational institu tion or agree to develop an educational plan, or be em ployed or actively seeking employment. 3. The young women must, because of some unusual cir cumstance, have made the decision to move from their family environment, 4. Participants must be will ing to accept supervision from the project staff, and deter mined to be suitable for group living. atr«. tsvm wuey ■■■Outgoing president Ms. Gaston Hosts Druid Hills Garden Club The Druid Hills Garden Club met recently at the home of Mrs. Edna Gaston, 2313 Edi son St. Mrs. Eva Wiley, the out going president, installed the following officers: Mrs. Ro bert Lyles - president, Mrs. Rebecca Patterson - first vice president, Mrs. Emma Wade - second vice-president, Mrs. Queen Ellis - third vice-presi dent, Mrs. Edna Gaston - recording secretary, Mrs. Hattie McCree - correspond ing secretary, Mrs. Maggie Johnson - treasurer and Mrs. Sophease Blackmon - chap lain.
