ON THE JAZZ SCENE. _ _
Patrice Rushen’s SHOUT IT
OUT, on Prestige Records,
starts off nice, but ends up
flat.
Ms. Rushen’s “Roll With
The Punches” and “Let Your
Heart Be Free” are two cat
chy tunes.. .but after that, eve
rything else is rather tedious.
Nevertheless, Rushen does
show some promise...maybe
in another album or two she’ll
be ready to break out.

Perhaps the best in a series
of post humous albums featur
ing the great John Coltrane is
on the market now.
It’s entitled AFRO BLUE
IMPRESSIONS a double al
bum recorded in 1962 when
“The Trane” was on tour in
Sweden and Germany. That’s
the era when Coltrane played,
with three other jazz greats:
pianist McCoy Tyner, Elvin
Jones (1977’s Drummer of the
Year in Down Beat Magazine)
and Bass player Jimmy Gar
rison.
Album highlights are “Lon
nie’s Lament,” “My Favorite
Things,” and “Chasing The
Trane.”

SOUL SOUNDS...
A nice new sound from
Paulette R. Eaves comes our
way on an album called ALL
ABOUT LOVE, on T.K. Re
cords.
Van McCoy and Clarence
Reid did much of the arrang
ing on this album...and Pau
lette’s singing does the rest.
Best cuts are “Jazz Freak,"
“Flesh," and “I Forgot To Be
Your Lover.”
Johnny Taylor’s CHRONI
CLE. TWENTY GREATEST
HITS, STAX (on Fantasy Re
cords) is a good collector's
item for those who like John
ny’s old Stax sound out of
Memphis.
Who can forget “Who’s Ma
king Love?”, “Testify,” “Jo
dy's Got Your Gal and Gone."
These and more of Johnny's
old best are on the album.
Patti La Re He's first solo LP
suddenly has taken off...Al
though it’s been out for a
couple of months...it hasn't
been selling very well, until
recently.
Now it's in the top 20 soul
albums in the nation and has
sold out of some record stores
in town.
Meanwhile, one of Patti's
former singing mates isn't
enjoying the same success.
One would expect an album by
a former member of the La
Belle group to have a lot of
drive, but it isn't there on
Nona Hendryx's LP, NONA.

The Ohio Players new al
bum has arrived. It's entitled
MR MEAN, on Mercury Re
cords.
It contains some good
sounds, but overall, it's nearly
as disappointing as their CON
TRADITION LP
But you still may enjoy the
title cut and "Fight Me, Chase
Me "

You’ve heard "Float On" by
the Floaters. Well, there’s a
Jim Berry
nother version out now...only
it’s called “Bloat On,’’ by none
other than Cheech and Chong
on Epic Records.
It’s about a couple of dudes
who like to eat...and eat...and
eat...
William Bell has a new
release with a similar theme
and sound of his hit, "Trying
To Love Two.’’
His latest is "Easy Cornin’
Out”...Hard Coin’ In” on the
Mercury label.
V
The Fatback Band seems to
like the “Booty” theme...
That’s all they have been
singing about for the past two
records. “Master Booty” is
their latest cut...their last jam
was also called “The Booty".
Both are on Spring Records.

The Emotions keep rolling
along with another fine effort
on Columbia Records. Their
new LP, SHOUTING OUT
LOVE flows well from begin
ning to end.
Especially good is their ver
sion of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No
Sunshine.” After kicking a
round for years in Chicago...
the group finally seems to
have made it.

DISCO TRACKS...
Listen for a high-energy
sound from a 2-man German
group called Trax. Their first
American release is entitled
“Watch Out” on Polydor Re
cords.
For two people , they kick
out a lot of sound. Trax’s Pete
Bellote knows what disco’s all
about...he’s produced several
Donna Summer songs.
Cuts you should hear soon
are “Watch Out For The Boo
gie Man,” and "Breathless.”
Speaking of Donna Sum
mer.her new double album is
now the number one disco
sound in town according to
Disco Sound Records. Right
behind her in the number two
spot is another Casablanca
disco queen...Roberta Kelly.

For those into the Philadel
phia sound comes a two-re
cord set featuring all the
famous artists on the “Phila
delphia International label.
On the "Philadelphia Clas
sics" UP are the O'Jays, the
Three Degrees, the Intruders,
MFSB, and Harold Melvin and
the Blue Notes.
Definitely a good invest
ment for disco dee jays...all
the cuts are dance tunes, and
they’re all at least nine min
utes long.
The Philly sound sure has
come a long way since the
sound of the Delphonics
