announced that appointments
of three key campaign offic
ers, and formally opened his
Charlotte campaign head
quarters at Suite 402 in the
Johnston Building, 212 S. Tr
yon Street
Steven E. Wooley, principal
for Trend Wear, Inc, was
named to head the budget
committee in the Maxwell
campaign, Pete Ellington, re
tired banker, will be cam
paign coordinator, and Free
man L. Harsey, President of
Carolina Developers, Inc.,
land developer, will serve as
the deputy campaign director
“I feel very fortunate to
have people of this caliber
joining me in my race for
congress," Maxwell said. "We
all know that a. candidate's
success depends largely on the
people who are running his
campaign. In that respect, I
believe that I have the cream

Maxwell said he has select
ed his campaign officers care
fully and that each of them has
been active in both the busi
ness world and in their civic
responsibilities.
“I plan to continue develop
ing my staff on this basis
throughout the district," he
said. "It is extremely encou
raging to know that so many
talented people are attracted
to my campaign, and I hope to
get their help in every precin
ct in the district."
The occasion was what Max
well called a “campaign up
date," the first in a series of
meetings that he has planned
to announce appointments, ad
dress critical issues, and to
issue information about his
campaign progress.

Church Hosts Ushers Banquet

of ushers held its annual ban
quet Saturday Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
The banquet was held at Clin
ton Chapel AME Zion Church.
Presiding at the banquet
was Mrs. Margaret Carothers,
district chairman. Also pre
sent were Mrs. Thomasenia
Wilson, first vice-president of
Western North Carolina board
of ushers and Mrs. Verona
Vaughn, head of the social
committee. Mrs. Eloise Mc
Clay being the only one with a
perfect attendance at the
meetings, received a certifi
cate of attendance in honor of
this. Mrs. McClay is a mem
ber of Walls Memorial AME
Zion Church.
According to Mrs. Carothers
Christmas carols were sung,
gift* exchanged and aecret
pals were revealed at the
banquet. Rev. L.C. Clark, pre
siding elder of the Charlotte
district, gave a few words of
encouragement to all present.
Mr. Edward 0. Tracy from
Salisbury, N.C. and president
of the Western North Carolina
board of ushers was also
present.
Ham and turkey with trim
mings, green beans, cranber
ry sauce, rolls, homemade
cake and coffee were the
delicacies served at the ban
quet.
The officers for the district
board of ushers are Mrs.
Margaret Carothers, district
chairman, Mrs. Mary McMul
len, recording secretary, Mr.
Hayward Vaughn, treasurer,
Mrs. Sadie Thomas, chaplan,
Mr. Jamm Wilson, district
choir director and Mrs. Thel
ma Jefferson, corresponding
secretary.
In an interview Mrs. Caro
thers said, ‘‘this was the first
year the banquet was held but
we hope to have it each year to
come.”
The banquet came to an end
with Mr. James Wilson sing
ing “What A Fellowship" the
closing benediction.

sembly No. 35 Order of the
Golden Circle recently held its
Annual Christmas Dinner at
the Ford’s Cafeteria on Sugar
Creek Rd
Presiding over this lovely
■ festive event was Loyal Lady
(L.L.) Azilee McKnight. In
opening this occasion was Ber
tha Ferguson. L.L.S.G.O.O. of
the Mtn. Region with the
offering of grace. The group
joined in and sang “Silent
Night," L.L. Lena Jackson
gave the invocation and L.L.
Dorothy C. Walker uttered
words of welcome.
L.L.A.R. Rose E. Richard
son then introduced the distin
guished speaker Mrs. Peggy
Beckwith, Project Director
and Executive Director of
Association for Sickle Cell
Diseases, Charlotte-Mecklen
burg, Inc. Mrs. Beckwith
spoke on the many aspects of

their origin, the difference
between the disease and the
trait, as well as symptoms,
detections, treatments and
cures for these diseases that
greatly affect a tremendous
number of the Black popula
tion.
It was at this time that
L.L.R. Azilee McKnight, re
presenting the Assembly, pre
sented to Mrs. Beckwith a
donation to the Association for
Sickle Cell Diseases.
After the presentation dis
tinguished guests present at
the dinner were recognized.
