BILL JOHNSON
SAY YOU SAW IT HERE
One of the hardest secrets for a man to keep is
his opinion of himself...
If you do not yet have the Super Bowl Mania,
WBTV will put you in the mood with a record
nine hours of sports broadcasting, on Sunday,
beginning at 12-Noon. WBTV also has a grand
treat scheduled for Thursday night, January 18.
It's the first regular season confrontation of
North Carolina's Tar Heels and the "Wolfpack"
of North Carolina State. The following Saturday,
if you care to look that far ahead, Channel 3 will
air the ACC doubleheader, with Maryland and
UNC battling in the first tilt and Virginia and
Clemson squaring off in the second.
The ACC twinbill on television this Saturday
will have Virginia facing N.C. State in the opener
and UNC meeting Duke in the nightcap.
Ever heard of Kim Fox and Kathy McAmis?
They're the budding stars in UNCC's women's
basketball program. Miss McAmis holds 14 team
records. Miss Fox is currently averaging 17
points and 14.5 rebounds. She is the team leader
in both departments.
UNCC's Lew Massev has nirkpH nn thf>
nickname "Machine Gun" because of his sensa
tional shooting. He's .515 percent from the field
and .667 percent from the line. The Pine ville
native, who likely will go high in the NBA draft,
is also averaging 6.7 rebounds and nine assists
per game.
Charlie Scott reportedly asked the Boston
Celtics to be traded. "Right now," the former
North Carolina standout explained last week, "I
think it would be better for all concerned. I'm
tired of keeping quiet. I'm not keeping quiet
anymore. They are always talking about chang
ing. Why is it me that always has to change?"...
Needless to say, he got his wish. -
Bet you have forgotten Reggie Jackson's
historic contribution to the world series record
books. The fabulous New York Yankee outfielder
not only is the first man to hit four home runs in
four consecutive swings of the bat, he is also the
first man to hit five home runs in a world series.
Talking about setting records. Walter Payton,
the wondrous Chicago Bears running back, toted
the pigskin to a record 275 yards in a single
coolest Dûs past sea»oil. That one will most
likây stand for a long, long time.
I wouldn't be surprised if the top joke of 1978
will be found in the headline in the current issue
of the Cleveland Call & Post newspaper which
reads "Richard Pryor Starts New Year With
A Bang!" The reference was to a story about
Pryor's marital problems which apparently got
out of control during the holidays.
In case you're looking for material for future
arguments. Dig this!...O.J. Simpson and Johnny

ners since 1966 who have not graduated. It's also
interesting to note that Earl Campbell of Texas,
the 1977 winner, will lack about 12 hours of
fulfilling his graduation requirements.
The impressive Basketball Guide that Joe
Foust has put together at North Carolina A&T
lists Steve Cassell and Willie Robinson, both
natives of Charlotte, on the Aggie roster.
A graduate of J.C. Smith, Foust also informs
that A&T has had only one losing season in
basketball since 1954. Yup, you guessed right! It
was last campaign when the Aggies limped
through a 3-24 campaign.
Look for the heavyweight fight between
Muhammad Ali and young Leon Spinks, slated
tor sometime in February, to be called off.
The loud noise you hear is that the Golden
Bulls are going to capture the CIAA Southern
Division crown. Local JCSU supporters are
apparently overlooking the fact that the Bulls
are currently giving up an average of 85.5 points
a game.

Fred Coleman, center for
the Garinger Wildcats, is a big
reason his team is challenging
for top honors in the Southwes
tern 4-A Conference
Last week, he scored nine
points against the Olympic
Trojans and 28 against the
South Mecklenburg Sabres in
two crucial games which pro
pelled the Wildcats to the top
of the conference.
The victories over the Tro
jans and the Sabres were
games Garinger needed to
win to assert themselves at
the top of the conference
The 6-3, 184 pound center
wears jersey number 32 and
lives with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. James Coleman in North
Charlotte.
Presently, he is averaging
almost 20 points per game and
is pulling down 13 rebounds.
How does Fred Coleman get
ready for a ball game?
"I prepare myself by going
home after school and going in
my room," he said. "I close
the door and listen to music,
something soft and mellow. A
lot of love records like Barry
White and Marvin Gaye."
He calls this his best year
ever, because his Coach Rollie
sumwait is "really letting me
play free."
His brother James Coleman
Jr is the person responsible
Jor his athletic growth and the
development of his basketball
skills.
The Salvation Army's cen
ter on Belmont Avenue was
the spawning ground for the
athlete He started playing for
the team there when he was in
the seventh grade. In eighth
grade, he moved to Eastway
where he also played in the
ninth grade.
For the people watching him
perform from the stands, he
wants them to say, "He is a
great ball handler and he
moves the ball well to be a big
man.''
In addition to playing bas
ketball, he plays baseball in
the summer with the semi-pro
Charlotte Hawks. One of the
schools interested in Coleman
is Mt. Olive, one of the state's
best junior college programs
in Mt. Olive, N.C., a small
town near Goldsboro.
The members of Mt. Sinai
Baptist Church has great ad
miration for his head coach,
Sumwalt, saying, "he is a
really good coach and we are
going to have a good team."

Exciting Prep Basketball
On Tap For Friday Night
By Jim Berry
Post Staff Writer
Some exciting high school
basketball action is on tap
Frida\. as the competition so
far this year is as balanced as
it has been for some time
Here's a look at some of the
action on tap:
North Mecklenburg at East
Mecklenburg...
The Eagles have long been a
football powerhouse ..but in
the basketball doghouse. This
year they're looking to turn
that around, as indicated by
last week's 3-point victory
over Myers Park They are led
by Senior guard Curtis Craw
ford.
But they won't find the going
easy against North...a team
which features two sharpshoo
ters in Mack Walls and Mike
Holmes.
Garinger at West Mecklen
burg ...
West Mecklenburg is having
its problems this year, while
Garinger is in a battle for the
Southwestern 4-A Conference
lead.
The Indians have some ta
—lent in Tony Maddox . but they
will go up against one of the
league's better defenses.
Harding at West Charlotte...
JANUARY...1978
West Cliarlotte comes out
shooting from all over the
floor and they have the fire
power to do it.
In last week's victory over
West Mecklenburg, the Lions
had four players in double
figures
But Harding is a team which
has been tough, and they've
played with a lot of character
so far. coming way behind a
couple of times this year to
win.
South Mecklenburg at Inde
pendence...
South can ill afford another
loss in conference play if they
hope to have a shot at the title,
and they are up against an
Independence team that may
be primed for an upset
But Independence will have
to stop South s Jerry Fitch if
they hope to pull this one out
Olympic at Myers Park,.
The Mustangs...the early
season favorites to win the
crown...are still in a dogfight
On paper...the Mustanga*
should be the easy favorite. ™
all of their starters can score
points and play defense. But
no one has been able to run
away from Olympic yet...pri
marily because of sharpshoot
ing Rickey Stevenson.
