John E. Williams ■ ••Lt. J.G. U.S. Coast Guard WflHams Was No Exception To The Rule? Special To The Po6t Many young men and wo men have a tough time deci ding what to do with their lives. Lieutenant tJ.G.) John Williams was no exception to the rule. A native of Charlotte. North Carolina, Lt. J.G. Williams has been in the Coast Guard for almost 11 years and eight years of that time was spent in the enlisted ranks working as a Radoman ‘Tve always had quite a biF of confidence in myself and that confidence with a positive attitude seems to stand out as the most important factors in my success in the Coast Gua rd. How you feel about your self, in most cases, will deter mine how others feel about you.” riavuig wuircu ms way up through the enlisted, ranks, John graduated from the Coast Guard’s Officer Candi dates School in 1975 and has had two assignments in what he calls “an exciting career field.” “My job in the Media Rela tions branch of Public Affairs is very simple, keep the public informed of Coast Guard acti vities. The excitement of the job comes in when I manage to have my articles published or when I get a chance to work with national celebrities such as Alex Haley, who is a retired Coast Guardsman." “Many people are living on archaic rumors about mili tary life. It’s not all fun, games and travel; it does entail some discipline and hard work. I really don’t know of anything that I could better recommend to an individual who does ,not have indistinct commitmenUSlTCdUege, uni versity or some other place of training, than one of the mili tary services. Of course I have a particular feeling about the Coast Guard. LL J.G. Williams is the son of Mrs. Polly Williams of 1411 Onyx St., and a 1965 graduate of West Charlotte Senior High School. John lives in Forestville, Maryland with his wife, the former Yvonne Glymph, and their two sons, Brian and Rodney.
