SINGER BOBBY WOMACK
Columbia Record# star
Womack Releases New Album
By Cynthia Bel]
Post Staff Writer
Bobby Womack, the sensa
tional Columbia Records re
cording star, has released a
new album titled PIECES. He
wrote five songs for this al
bum and used three of the five
songs on PIECES.
Originally from Cleveland,
Ohio, the St year old Womack
began his singing career at an
early age. At age eight, he re
leased a single titled “Buffalo
BUI.” He feels that he got his
teachings from the gospel.
When asked about his religion,
he said that he simply believes
in God. “You can reach God
anywhere," stated Bobby in a
recent interview.
Famous gospel groups like
the Soul Stirrers and the Blind
Boys used Bobby Womack as
their opening act during the
formative years of his career.
In fact, it was while he was
performing for the Soul Stir
rers that their group feeder,
Sam Cooke, acknowledged Ms
wonderful God given talent.
Sam played a meaningful part
in his career and Bobby's
affection and admiration for
him is everlasting. "We team
ed so much from Sam. He
taught us the importance of
coming up with a catchy
phrase."
"Looking For A Love” was
Bobby's first hit back in 1962
Two years later, the Womack
Brothers, then known as the
Valentinos, recorded "It’s All
Over Now." It was at this
plateau that Bobby began to
form his act, first in the studio
with his musicians and then as
a songwriter and recording
artist. He wrote “I’m A Mid
night Mover" and “I’m In
Love,” for Wilson Pickett and
a host of songs for Janis
Joplin, the Rolling Stones,
Aretha Franklin, George Ben
son, New Birth, and Rufus.
Bobby debated as a solo
artist with his LP "Fly Me To
The Moon". His songwriters
incorporated a variety of sty
les on this album. Vocally,
Bobby offered a rather throa
ty delivery that was pure and
invigorating At times his voi
ce is smooth and calm and
when the situation arises it
can be exciting and crisp. The
release of COMMUNICA
TION, his second album, esta
blished the Womack sound.
The follow up LP, UNDER
STANDING, his personal phi
losophy began to shine
through in his music.
After recording under the
United Artist label for about
nine years, Bobby moved his
talents under the Columbia
Records umbrella and has
been there for about two
years. His debut LP under this
label, “Home Is Where The
Heart Is" is truely reflective
of the Womack style. Since
then Bobby has released PIE
CES which gave him incentive
to name the back up group
from the LP PIECES, Pieces
Bobby and Pieces are sche
duled for a four week tour of
South Africa in the near fu
tiipp Hp will aooear in
Charlotte in May Newlyweds
for two years, Bobby and his
wife Regina have a son named
Truth by Sly Stone of Sly and
The Family Stone. He feels
that “the Key to success is
being content."
