SINGER BOBBY WOMACK Columbia Record# star Womack Releases New Album By Cynthia Bel] Post Staff Writer Bobby Womack, the sensa tional Columbia Records re cording star, has released a new album titled PIECES. He wrote five songs for this al bum and used three of the five songs on PIECES. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, the St year old Womack began his singing career at an early age. At age eight, he re leased a single titled “Buffalo BUI.” He feels that he got his teachings from the gospel. When asked about his religion, he said that he simply believes in God. “You can reach God anywhere," stated Bobby in a recent interview. Famous gospel groups like the Soul Stirrers and the Blind Boys used Bobby Womack as their opening act during the formative years of his career. In fact, it was while he was performing for the Soul Stir rers that their group feeder, Sam Cooke, acknowledged Ms wonderful God given talent. Sam played a meaningful part in his career and Bobby's affection and admiration for him is everlasting. "We team ed so much from Sam. He taught us the importance of coming up with a catchy phrase." "Looking For A Love” was Bobby's first hit back in 1962 Two years later, the Womack Brothers, then known as the Valentinos, recorded "It’s All Over Now." It was at this plateau that Bobby began to form his act, first in the studio with his musicians and then as a songwriter and recording artist. He wrote “I’m A Mid night Mover" and “I’m In Love,” for Wilson Pickett and a host of songs for Janis Joplin, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, George Ben son, New Birth, and Rufus. Bobby debated as a solo artist with his LP "Fly Me To The Moon". His songwriters incorporated a variety of sty les on this album. Vocally, Bobby offered a rather throa ty delivery that was pure and invigorating At times his voi ce is smooth and calm and when the situation arises it can be exciting and crisp. The release of COMMUNICA TION, his second album, esta blished the Womack sound. The follow up LP, UNDER STANDING, his personal phi losophy began to shine through in his music. After recording under the United Artist label for about nine years, Bobby moved his talents under the Columbia Records umbrella and has been there for about two years. His debut LP under this label, “Home Is Where The Heart Is" is truely reflective of the Womack style. Since then Bobby has released PIE CES which gave him incentive to name the back up group from the LP PIECES, Pieces Bobby and Pieces are sche duled for a four week tour of South Africa in the near fu tiipp Hp will aooear in Charlotte in May Newlyweds for two years, Bobby and his wife Regina have a son named Truth by Sly Stone of Sly and The Family Stone.
