DiggB, who is cur rently in Africa on congres sional business, says he’s in Hemsley , Sanford To Perform On CBS On The Air Art Carney has a battered felt hat hanging in his closet. He originally purchased the hat for $5.00. as a high schoo ler in the 1930’s, and is still with him as a good luck charm. Anyone who grew up with television in the 1960’s will be familiar with that hat. With an up-turned brim, it topped off a costume which consisted of baggy pants and a vest worn over a T-shirt. Inside that outfit was one of the best second bananas in the busi ness: loveable sewer-working slob Eld Norton-Carney’s crea tion, who still generates laugh ter in late night re-runs of “The Honeymooners,” star ring Jackie Gleason. Carney appears with Mary Tyler Moore, Walter Croidtite, Carroll O’Conner, Carol Bur nett, Tony Randall, Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford in a retrospective of Saturday night television programming on the final two-anda-half hour broadcast of “CBS: ON THE AIR,” Saturday, April l, at 8:30 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. “Somehow,” reminisces Carney, “I never got the fee ling of being a second banana while working with Gleason. The whole cast developed into a team. Jackie was very generous. He let me go ahead full steam. He never held an actor back when be had an idea that would contribute _g>mgMj% to the show. He let us have our say. You know, I think I’m going to have that hat bronzed someday.” There was a touch of irony in Carney’s team with Tony Randall for this special broad cast, at CBS Studio Center in Hollywood, in which they re call some of the golden mo ments of the network’s Satur day night programs. It was Carney who opened on Broadway as the meti culoisly fussy Felix Unger in “The Odd Couple.” Carney is an unregenerate Randall admires who recalls fondly their early radio days when they worked on such popular programs as ‘“Gang busters,” “Counterspy” and “Mr. District Attorney.” I r- 1 Merchant* Who | Advertise hi The Charlotte Post Are Telling You | They Appreciate t Your Business !
