First United
Will Open
Its Archives
by Susan Ellsworth
Post Staff Writer
The First United Presbyter
ian Church will be opening its
archives to the public, accord
ing to Gerson Stroud, public
relations chairman for the
History-Archives Committee.
Opening day, Sunday, Dec.
31 will feature the present
ation of documents and pre-'
pared papers by the parish's
History-Archives Committee.
Exhibits will be held at the
Fellowship Hall Dec 31. at 4
p.m. and will remain open
Jan. 1-14 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
weekdays, and on Jan. 7 and
14 from 12:15-4 p.m.
The project got underway in
February 1978 when members
of First United Presbyterian
Church established a com
mittee "to research docu
ments, and perpetuate rich
historical background from
the early years to the pre
sent," Stroud commented
Cornell Lydia Pride is chair
man of the committee.
First United Presbyterian
Church is one of the most
influential black Presybterian
churches in America, accord
ing to Stroud.
Formed in 1968. the church
was the result of a merger
between Brooklyn and 7th
Street Presbyterian churches.
The Brooklyn area, which
Stroud called the heart of
black Charlotte, was labeled
as a disadvantaged area and
consequently earmarked for a
redevelopment program.
The merger led to a combin
ing or membership and resou
rces expansion and develop
ment.
Research for the project has
been done in many areas
including historical data of the
foundings of both churches,
building design of First United
Presbyterian, taped inter
views with people having
knowledge of the church's
history, youth programs, old
·' members of both churches,
and pastors and moderators.
