Black Movies TV News Briefs Natalie Cole Comments On Her Broken Marriage by Jesse H. Walker Special to the Post Singer Natalie Cole com mented on her broken marriage to Marvin Yancey, her co-producer and writer during a Washington, D.C. interview. “Marvin is a real musician, like my father. He used to play on the window sills because he didn’t have a piano. He’s a genius. I gave something to him, he to me. It would be a shame to break up a successful musical partner ship, but it's just something we are stUl working on.” The cast of “I Love My Wife”, is feverishly rehears ing for a May 1 opening date with the black principles. With Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs of “Welcome Back, Hotter” fame replacing Jimmy Walker, other members are Hattie Winston, Larry Riley and Marjorie Barnes. Another jazz spot is opening in NYC with the Sheraton Centre opening its French Quarter in what was once the Royal Box in the Americana Hotel. Earl (Fatha) Hines comes in May 7. Also schedul ed are Freddy Cole and Jonah Jones. Atlantic City’s Resorts In ternational is piling them into its Superstar Theatre with Frank Sinatra. On tap for three-day weekends are Donna Summer, Shirley Bassey, Lou Rawls, Ella Fitz gerald and Lola Falana. Full weeks starting in June include BUI Cosby. With "Zoot Suit" on Broad way giving the Chicanos something to shout about, now comes "Sancocho” at the N.Y. Shakespeare Festival’s Public Theatre to satisfy the city’s vast Hispanic population. The story is about a young Puerto Rican New Yorker who is in love with the daughter of a black minister. Hector Jaime Mercado and Ka-Ron Brown are the couple. Others in the young, mostly black and Hispanic cast include Ramiro Ramirez, the actor; Ellis Williams and Theresa Venque. C. Keith Alexander, disc jockey at that popular disco station, WKTU-FM, is con ducting “rap” sessions on disco music at Cafe Freinette on Park Avenue on Wednesdays. The newest old hat in the record business is the disco crossover. Just about every rock star has cut at least one disco track for nis or her latest album, and a f-rw jazz greats have gone the same route. Now, after 25 years of tft. same beat, “Godfather of Soul" James Brown has step ped into the disco limelight with • new LP, "Original Disco Man” on Polydor. Some background on the Freddie Drew Trio that is playing nightly at the packed Showman** Cafe on Harlem’* 125th Street. Benny Harris, 22, the bassist, attended the Berkeley College of Music, and is a native of Boston. Jimmy Milner, 34, a native of Detroit, is the vocalist with range of five octaves. Freddie Drew, 38, the pianist, has performed with George Benson and is the brother of Kenny Drew, famous record ing artist of the Bebop era. Smalls’ Paradise is being renovated and plans a come back under the new ownership of Fred Staton and a partner. The First Inner City Bankers-Brokers Ball was held at Harlem World, the disco, on Easter Monday with Arthur Prysock and his big 1^— NATALIE COLE .popular singer band. And the Copasetics threw a mad one at the Renny LAWRENCE-HILTON JACOBS .Replaces Jimmy Walker played with an 18-piece band. Harold Anderson, manager of public affairs tor toe International Telephone and Telegraph Co. (ITT), is also on the Advisory Board for the ITT Chorale which gave its annual Easter Concert in the \ lobby of the corporation’s t*ark Avenue world headquar ters. Anderson also sings baritooe in the choral group that is directed by Donald E. Register. Ragan Henry, president of Broadcast Enterprises Net work, Inc. of Philadelphia, spoke at the second annual mass media conference held recently at AAT State Univ. in Greensboro, N.C. I ■ • • ' • .
