Webber Jr., D.D.S. Dental Emergency Have you wondered what you could do If on a trip and some member of the family suddenly developed an agoniz ing toothache? It happens, and it’s a good idea to have your options firmly in mind as creative thinking doesn’t come easy in time of emer gency. The first and best approach to solving a dental emergency is to exhaust all avenues of finding professional help; check the local yellow pages and usually you will find a number to call - day or night - for dental referral services. If nothing like this is shown, go to the nearest general hospital emergency room. If they can not help you they’ll know where you can seek and find help. You might also look under SCHOOLS - DENTAL in the yellow pages, as most of them have emergency treat ment facilities. Then, if there are none of the above in the area you are visiting, here are some tempo rary relief measures you could try on your own; + If there are indications the toothache’s cause is not in the tooth itself, but perhaps coming from a ‘‘sinus condi tion,” you may want to try taking some kind of deconges tant tablet or liquid, purchas able without prescription at any pharmacy. + Taking two aspirin with water could provide almost I"1 ' immediate relief, but don't exceed limitations stated on the label. And, make certain that the person taking them has a medical history that allows for such medication; if in doubt, don’t use aspirin, and definitely don’t use it if the patient is on any other medi cation and-or under the influ ence of alcoholic beverages DO NOT lay aspirin directly on the adjoining gum or sus pect tooth. + If the tooth has lost a filling, or has an obvious cavity, you could try soaking a small cotton ball in oil of cloves, (see nearby drug store), and carefully press it into the cavity. + Applying beat or cold to the area around the aching tooth may intensify the pain. Such applications are best avoided unless recommended by your dentist, when under his direct care. Wise preparation for a trip will include having all needed dental work taken care of by your dentist before you depart, just like the astro nauts did before leaving for the moon. Even then, it may prove helpful to carry a dental emergency relief kit contain ing the items mentioned here and any others your personal dentist recommends.
