New Dental Product How does a new dental product get oa the market, and bow is it proved to be safe to sell to the public as an over-tbe-conter product? Pro gress toward the retail mar-. ketplace can take several routes and the following is one example. Recently, Dr. Israel Wein berg, head of the department of oral biology and pathology at State University College, Stony Brook, N.Y., discovered a peptide which has been named Sialin. In laboratory tests, Sialin (having already been successfully synthesi zed) has shown a potential for reducing tooth decay through its seeming ability to raise the pH level in the mouth to a point that makes the decay process unlikely. Since many popular foods and most can dies cause an acid to form in the mouth, thus setting the stage for decay to begin, negating that acid should cut the decay-forming potential. This new peptide - if proved safe and effective - might be used as an additive in foods, mouthwash or toothpastes. Therefore, it is readily under standable why a large com pany like Warner-Lambert has already invested nearly $1 million by providing a six year grant to State University College, so testing may pro ceed. Of course, such a grant has strings; it will give the company rights of use of all new peptides that may be discovered during the conti nued research and testing, plus a royalty payment ar rangement for exclusive use of Sialin. Now, with this funding, tests on animals can begin, and these will continue for about 1-2 years. If these are success ful, Warner-Lambert will then have to obtain an investiga tional new drug (IND) permit from the FDA before clinical testing may begin. When this is granted, clinical testing of the product involved is requir ed for a minimum of three years before it can be placed on the market. If all goes well, in fr-8 years there may be a new method of preventing tooth decay through a new product application. If it doesn’t prove effective and safe...back to the drawing board! No, it isn’t time to quit brushing yet!
