His ability to follow his shots to the basket
doesn’t look like a “benchboy” to me; and
any team that beats the Vikings will have
surely denied Leak the ball.
Chris Brown trails Leak with 24.0 points
| per game and an Olympic sophomore,
Garinger forward, Frank Johnson with 20.7
points per game, West Charlotte’s forward,
Frank Henderson with 20.3 points, East
Meek’s guard Warren Wallace, is neck and
neck with Henderson also 20.3 points per
game. Close behind is West Charlotte’s
forward, Sampson McCorkle, with 19.3 per
game, Independence Patriots guard, Jeff
Means, with 19.3 per game, South’s center,
*. Johnny Edwards, with 18 per game and
Harding’s forward, James Reid, with 16.75
* per game.
The Conference’s highest scorer in a
: game title belongs to Leak and Henderson.
: Both have hit for 28 points.
Another man to catch is West Charlotte’s
Scott Little. Before the season is over this
- big man will have earned the title of the
Intimadator. He is such a force under the
[ basket with his 6-6 frame.
Looks like Charlotte is going to be
• crowded with recruiters.

Friday is a big night for
the Southwestern 4A Con
ference. Headlining the
schedule are games netting
East at Independence, Ga
ringer at North Mecklen
burg, West Charlotte at
Olympic, and West Char
lotte at South Mecklen
burg.
Today’s game pits Hard
ing at Myers Park. The
Rams need a win to keep
their momentum going.
The two schools are bitter
rivals. The Mustang of
fense is built around cen
ter, Darryl White and
guard, Sanford Tillman.
The Rams are known for
being a run-and-gun team.
They are led by James
Reid.
The East Eagles, led by
hot-shooting Warren Wal
lace, will go into a Hornet’s
Nest when they tackle the
Patriots at home. The Pa
triots have a war arsenal to
shoot down the high flying
Eagles in Eric Boyd, Andre
Rucker, Baron Odom and
Jeff Means. The Eagles
McCorkle Is
“Player Of
The Week”
. Last year, Sampson
McCorkle was safe in the
confines of North Mecklen
burg. He was an outstand
ing athlete and helped
North’s basketball pro
gram tremendously.
McCorkle’s family
moved, and suddenly he
found himself at West
Charlotte last Friday night.
Sure he played in the Vi
king’s gym but to the beat
of a different drummer.
The new West Charlotte
Lion netted 25 points. And
McCorkle gave them the
most op free throw, follow
shots and short jumpers to
put his team through its
first road test.
The Lions face more
challenges with games Fri
day at South Meek, and
Tuesday at East Meek.
They need to win both of
these if they are to return
to “number one’’ making a
dream a reality.
At 6’3” and 190 pounds,
McCorkle is the player of
the week. He is being re
cruited for his basketball
and football playing abili
ties.
will counter with Warren
Wallace and Jeff Means
The Garinger Wildcats
will invade a tough place
when they go to North to
play the hot Vikings, Odel
Walker, Derrick Knox and
Frank Johnson lead the
Wildcat contingent. The
Vike’s are led by Robert
Leak, B. J. Clark, Randy
Kendricks, and Scotty Wil
liams.
West Meek will travel to
the Trojan’s lair to battle.
The Indians will need a
sneak attack to play
against Chris Brown, De
rek Martin, Carlos Concep
tion, Derrick Floyd and
Johnny Haieley and Dan
Preston. The Indians are
led by Jimmy Patterson.
The Lions don't usually
reach victory when playing
at South. Perhaps this cus
tom will soon be broken
by Sampson McCorkle,
Frank Henderson, Scott
Little, Billy Overcash and
James Mitchell. Sabres
consist of Johnny Edwards,
Wayne Griffin and Bryant
McKnight just to name a
few. _,

“We Can’t All Stay on the Bench”
Word has it out that Robert Leak of North
Mecklenburg is at this stage the most
improved player in the Southwestern 4A
Conference.
Leak was a benchman last year for the
Vikings. However, over the summer the 6-5
jumping jack could be seen perfecting his
game at the basketball goals at Hornet’s
Nest Park.
Seems all the hard work paid off for
Robert Leak for at the moment he is the
leading scorer in the Southwestern 4A
Conference.
