Twas only a few days before Christmas when all through the house not a creature was stirring.not even a mouse. Wonder why all the quietness?....The ole man of the house was overburdened with the unfinished chores for Christmas. After this is the time of year to be jolly, with full rounds of merrimaking, and stuff like that. This is also the time of the year when the biggest bite is taken from the pocket books. Ca flirt /\lr\ _ t L1 1 • « v vi uic uuuj)c lb Lomroruea with such demanding chores as playing Santa Clause, buying toys, gifts, etc. And, to make matters worse, the available funds are not generous enough to make the necessary purchases...and the credit cards are as loaded as the next door neighbor. These are indeed crying times. ...You see, the ole man’s next payday is a week after the holiday celebration is over. So all is lost and the ole man is engulfed in total despair. Right?....wrong! There is always a way out. Even in the darkest moments one can always find solace by placing the blame on someone else, Right?....Right! So, in keep ing with the mood of the times, it would be simple to lay the blame on whitey! The ole man can simply tell mom and the kids that Santa is white and “You all know white people ain’t going to give us blacks nothng!” The point is being made here that neither Christmas nor any other time of the year will be merry or jolly unless you manage well. SAY YOU SAW IT HERE. Clarence “Bighouse” Gaines, the biggest thing to happen to Winston-Salem since R. J. Reynolds set up shop there, will stage a topflight Basketball Tournament in the Clarence E. Gaines Arena on the Winston Salem State University Campus this week end. Thursday night’s opener will match the Winston-Salem State Rams against up-and Wming Fayetteville State in the 7 o’clock opener. North Carolina Central, which has had a great recruting season, will face Guilford in the nightcap. The winners will -clash Friday night in the championship game, with the losers opening the show in the 7 p.m. Consolation Contest. It’s worth the short drive to the Twin City. Basketball’s most famous coach offered, via telephone Tuesday morning, “I’m satis fied with the progress our team is making. If we keep improving, we should be one of the teams to be reckoned with down the home stretch.” Winston-Salem State, along with Johnson C. Smith’s young Bulls, is favored to capture the Southern Division title this campaign. Alfred Wring, Johnson C. Smith’s “out-of this-world” lineman, has been chosen to compete in the Black College All Star Bowl II in New Orleans next month. After Maryland routed UMES and State annihilated St. Augustine, one would think that, in basketball at least, we ain’t ready yet. At times we are convinced that secrecy is the best publicity. Had you thought not the fact that with inflation now at a five-year high, it will soon be cheaper to burn dollar bills than home heating oil? tmi Mcuiain, wno naa some Drigni years at Greensboro College, has joined Warren Reynolds at Shaw University. He will serve as the assistant basketball coach.... Norfolk State in the CIAA and North Carolina A&T of the MEAC are looking ahead to great basketball seasons Coach Lucias Mitchell, ^PWho guided Norfolk State to the CIAA Tournament Championship finals and later won the NAIA District 19 title last season, has coxed a 6-foot-8-inch, 195-pound fresh man from Dallas Tex. who Mitchell says will be an All-American within two years. Would you believe the hottest name on the pro draft list is not White, Ferguson or Sims?....It’s Perry Harington, the Jackson State All-American running bank who is being touted above the famed Walter Payton, another Jackson State alumnus. Remember Ernie Holmes, the huge Pitts burg Steeler star who retired from pro football after he was traded to Tampa Bay last year? Holmes, who first turned to wrestling, has now traded the wrestling mat for boxing gloves. .Muhammad Ali is getting a whopping $75,000 for each speaking engagement. And is getting more movie offers than Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen, and Sidney Poitier combined. Who said he was washed up? Whitney Van Cleve has resigned the head football coach post at Albany State College, following a miserable 1-9-1 campaign. A veteran with 21 years as head coach, his record now stands at 92-110-10. Had you noticed that Ervin “Magic” Johnson is not listed among the NBA scoring leaders? Y’all have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS! f ALFRED WRING ...Strong defensive lineman JCSL Great Wring Will Play In All-Star Bowl Special To The Post Alfred Wring had a hunch about coach Wylie Harris that paid off in being selected to the Black College All-Star Bowl to be played in New Orleans’ Super Dome on January 5. “After last season I was invited by several pro teams for a tryout,” explained the massive de fensive tackle for the Golden Bulls football team. “But I felt like I could learn more under coach Harris so I chose to stay for my fifth year of eligibility.” In the previous year the Del ray Beach, Florida native accounted for 103 tackles, seven fumble recoveries, one blocked kick and 12 sacks. Wring was a marked man in his final year. “Eight teams used double-team blocking against me in the 10 games I played this year,” ex plained Alfred. Peer pres sure and fan expectation added to the challenge as much was expected ol Wring. The defensive line man responded with 104 tackles, two blocked kicks one fumble recovery and f sacks. He was the spirit ual leader by his fired-uf presence on the field. “I’m pleased that Alfrec was chosen.” remarkec narns. u is to Allred s credit that a player from a 1-9 team is so highly hon ored by opposing coaches and scouts to be picked to play with the best black players in the country.” Allred will join the East squad, composed of CIAA, MEAC and independent teams, in facing a West All-Star team. The game will present national expo sure for Wring as the NFL teams will have their scouts present all week "Alfred stood a 50-50 chance of being drafted, but with being chosen for the All-Star game his odds have increased in his favor,” commented Har ris. "Four or five profes sional teams have already expressed a strong interest in Wring and this game will only increase his expo sure.” "Hercules”, Wring’s nickname from his love of weight training, was also honored as All-CIAA by the league's coaches as well as being named All-District-26 and being nominated for five All-American teams. “So much was expected of Alfred that it is a tribute to him as an athlete and a person to be able to say that Wring fulfilled his ex pectations," remarked Harris. Police Records Bureau Limits Service To Public Beginning January 1, the joint city-county police Re cords Bureau will be open to the public only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The bureau now serves the pub lic 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The bureau will continue to remain open round the clock, and will serve police officers as usual. However, the purpose of limiting re cords service to the public except during normal working hours is to enable records clerks to perform other duties with fewer interruptions for the re mainder of the day. Such a plan is expected to produce more efficient service overall. PoaApHo rtA ■»«- nnnnl ally process in excess of 200,000 documents for the Charlotte and Mecklenburg County Police Depart ments. Presently they handle about 6,000 persons a month who come in per son to the Law Enforce ment Center primarily for copies of traffic accident reports and arrest infor mation The majority of these persons already come from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to city police Captain M. C. Moore, bureau supervisor .Some of citizens' inquir ies to the Records Bureau could be avoided, said Moore, if motorists in volved in accidents would exchange information with one another at the scene Police officers have forms which victims can use to exchange this information, such as insurance company name, driver's license number and tag number If a citizen needs a copy of a record and cannot come to the Law Enforce ment Center in person, he shoulcf mail his request to the Records Bureau, Char lotte Police Department, Charlotte, North Carolina 28202, along with a self addressed envelope and $1. He should include the name under which the record might be filed, the date of the incident, location, and approximate time of day. Closing the Records Bureau to the public after 5 p.m and on Sundays in no way will affect any other police service, added Moore. Make Safety Check Of ChrintmaH IJg}ifc Before putting up last year’s Christmas lights, check them for frayed cords, exposed wires, chip ped sockets and loose plugs If any of these disorders are found, either repair the light set or discard it. Many accidents involv ing lighted Christmas de corations are preventable, say specialists with the North Carolina Agricul tural hxtension Service All cord seta should have the Underwriters Labora tories approval. Rubber washers will keep tinsel out of the sockets Metal reflectors for bulbs can cause a short; styrene plastic ones are safer Insu lated stapes are the best way to secure lights strong around molding or a door frame A tree that is kept damp is safer The tree holder should have a water well and It should be filled every day Thursday.
