Black Movies, TV News Briefs Sidney Poirier’s Autobiography Is Good Gift! By Jesse H. Walker Special To The Post Once again WBLS-FM is the most listened-to radio station in the New York metropolitan area, ac cording to the latest results, for May, from the Mediastat rating service. WBLS, with a 9.1 percent share of the 13 million persons in the market, holds a 2.4 percent lead over second place, most im pressive, since their lead was but .9 percent in April. WBLS-FM is the flagship station for black owned Inner City Broadcasting, a group of seven stations serving metropolitan areas across the country. + + + + + ..For the third straight year, Kentucky Fried Chicken is spon soring the Harlem YMCA All Stars Contest, to be held July 19-20 in neighborhood parks and on Ran dall’s Island. Competition will in clude a basketball “Shoot-Out,” pushups, an obstacle course run, the standing broad jump and the mil? run. Grand prize to top male and female will be $500 cash plus ' an all-expense paid week in the Bahamas for two. + + + + + Betye Saar, whose highly suc cessful exhibit “Rituals” continues at the Studio Museum in Harlem through June 30, was in the city from the West Coast on June 9 and 10 giving interviews. + + + + + The World Invitational Double Dutch Championship has been re scheduled for June 28 at Lincoln Center Fountain Plaza. The rope jumping sport had to be curtailed on May 31 when torrential rains cut things short although two-thirds of the competition had been com pleted. Teams from as far as Boulder, Colorado were present. Double Dutch is sponsored by Harlem's 32nd Police Precinct with a grant from Mobil Oil Cor poration and directed by Detective David Walker. + + + + + The Federal Communications Commission last week voted to drop the special class of "clear channel” radio stations, making way for up to 12S new AM stations, many of which will be earmarked for ownership by minority groups. I ' - .• ' ... _ + + + + + composer-writer-actress Micki Grant is represented in two Broad way shows, one a hit and the other not quite so. The return of “Your Arms Too Short To Box With God. ” again received top praise from the critics. The musical, “conceived” from the book of St. Matthew by Vinnette Carroll, has music and lyrics by Alex Bradford, supple mented by Micki Grant. But “It’s So Nice To Be Civilized,” is a musical with book, lyrics and music by Micki Grant. And while Vivian Reed and Mabel King and Obba Babatunde received high honors, and the music faint praise, all the critics condemned the book as dull and without dramatic shape. 4- 4- 4- 4- + When talking of Atlantic City these days, everyone is mentioning Resorts International and the gambling casinos open there now, Blacks shouldn’t forget that the Club Harlem remains open on Kentucky Avenue. The top 46-year old club, where once Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, Lola Falana and others once held sway is now featuring the likes of The Stylistics (June 27-29), Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (July 11-13), and the Manhattans and Dance Dimen sions (July 3-6). Harlem’s own Dayton Selby Trio will be appear ing there in the Lounge, opening June 27 through September 1. 4- -t- 4- 4- 4 St. Albans mortician Neil Phil lips was pleasantly surprised when the captain on Eastern flight from Miami to Freeport, Grand Ba hamas announced it was his birth day during the Memorial Day Weekend Trip of the Fellas and the whole plane seranaded him. Some 170 enjoyed this annual trip this year to the Xandu Beach Hotel where they enjoyed the nightly music of the Explorers (Frank Munnings on drums, Forcey on guitar and Vernon on bass). Joe Dargan of Teaneck, NJ won the golf tournament. Top jazz artists will be appearing throughout the evening. “incredible Hulk” David Banner tries to thwart a robbery by joining the thieves, on “The Incredible Hulk,” to be re broadcast Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. Banner is under suspicion at the department store in which he is working because of inventory dis crepancies. The suspicions seem to be confirmed after the store is invaded by thieves while he is working overtime and he has to throw in with the would-be robbers to protect co-workers who are being held as hostages. The Jeffersons The Jeffersons and Willises are shocked when the “expectant father” Lionel storms out of the apartment to pursue a boyhood dream, on “The Jeffersons," to be rebroadcast Sunday, June 15 at 9:30 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. Lionel’s mysterious actions make sense to no one except George, who has been through a similar crisis himself.
