Rep. Martin Is Robert A. Taft Institute Speaker United States Rep. James G. Martin and North Carolina Lt. Gov. James C. Green are the featured speakers for the 11th an nual Robert A. Taft Insti tute of Government Se minar to be held at the University of North Caro lina at Charlotte July 21 through Aug. 1. Rep. Martin from North Carolina's Ninth Congress ional District is the speaker at 7 p.m. Monday, July 21, at the opening day dinner in the Lucas Room of the Cone Center at UNCC. His topic is "The United States Congress: How Represen tative and Effective in the 1980s." Lt. Gov. Green will be the concluding speaker at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, in Cone Center's Lucas Room. His topic is "What I Think Teachers Should Be Telling Students About Politics." They are among 29 Re publican and Democratic elected officials, party offi cials, news reporters, busi ness and labor leaders and educators who will lead seminars on the American political process during the two-week session. Thirty-five teactiers have been selected for the Taft Institute Seminar at UNCC. Designed for ele mentary and secondary school administrators, li brarians and teachers of social studies, civic or government, the Taff Insti tue Seminar will examine the American system of government and two-party Workshop Banned Instruments s On Steel Drum A free summer workshop 01 steel drum instruments will be held at Spirit-Square on Saturday July 19. Under the direction of Jir Boyce, Spirit Square's Director c Steel Drums, participants will dii cover the origins of the steel drui instruments, learn how they ar constructed from oil drums, an actually play music on the drurr during the two-hour session whic begins at 10:30 a.m. ι ne worKsnop is open ιο cniiare and adults and will provide a interesting glimpse of an art fori that is rapidly gaining popularil in the United States. Lyons, . chairman of the UNCC Po litical Science Department, is director of the Taft Se minar. He says those ele mentary and secondary educators selected for the program will receive fel lowship and earn three hours of graduate credit in political science. Supported by the Robert A. Taft Institute of Govern ment, a nonpartisan, non profit educational corpora tion with national offices in New York City, the semin ar is being held at UNCC for the 11th straight year. There are 36 programs sponsored nationwide this year.
