Church News Brief
Bishop BroWs Years In Hie Service Of Hie Lord Have Not Been In Vain
By Teresa Burns
Host Staff Writer
Bishop Matthew Brown
is 73 now and the years he
has placed in the service of
the Lord have not been in
vain. He started preaching
around the age of 21 and
still carries the Trinity
firmly within his heart.
He is now the overseer
of the church he founded,
Jerusalem Church of God
which was chartered in
1936. Today two young min
isters, Rev. Arthur Young,
the Bishop's nephew, and
Rev. Bobby Thompson,
deliver the sermons, but
Bishop Brown is there
every Sunday lending his
strong spiritual philosophy "
that God is all powerful.
He will tell you quickly
that everything - material
istic and otherwise, came
directly from the Lord. He
smiles at the thought, for
he is one man truly edu
cated through the grace of
God.
During his pastorate
Bishop Brown pastored
four churches, sometimes
all of them at one time. His
band of musicians and
singers traveled North and
South Carolina spreading
evangelistic glory.
The first Jerusalem
Church of God was located
in Southside. About six
‘years ago, due to urban
development, the edifice
was relocated to 1704 West
! Trade Street.
' When the church was lo
cated in Southside, Rev.
Lemar Foster, present
pastor of Second Calvary
Baptist Church, can re
member attending Bishop
Brown’s services.
“I can remember a man
who fostered education in
side the church. He dealt
with Sunday School, Vaca
tion Bible School, and
made opportunities for the
congregation to learn,"
■ Rev. Foster reminisced.
"He has such a rare and
generous nature."
"Bishop Brown would
keep a positive image
about him and made many
- young people in Soutbside
want to better them
selves," Rev. Foster
continued.
Bishop Brown married
Lillie Mae Smith Brown in
1826. "He was called to
preach around 1828," Mrs.
Brown recalls. "He has
been very faithful. I can
count on one hand the
services he has missed -
and he has taken no
vacations.”
For these reasons and
more the congregation of
the Jerusalem House of
Ciod and the family of
Bishop Brown are now
honoring him with a week
long Founder’s Day
celebration.
Last Sunday, August 16,
Beaulah Brown, the
Bishop’s daughter-in-law,
delivered a pre-founder's
day message. She gave
some history of the Bishop
including the fact that he
and his wife raised seven
children, four girls and
three boys. All of their
children are living today.
Last Monday, August 17,
' Rev. J. R. Caldwell, pastor
of New Bethlehem FBHC
and his congregation and ‘
choir conducted the ,
service.
Tuesday Rev. N. Ander
son, pastor of New Zion
FBHC and his congrega
tion were special guests.
Wednesday, Rev. Tyson
from the St. Paul Holiness
; l Church and his congrega
