News Enjoy Keadmg About Themselves? People are always in the news because others enjoy reading about them. Accomplishments are presented and activities, positive and negative, are reported. It’s not necessarily conceited to want to read about yourself and most people like to do that. There fore, this column is dedicated completely to people, in hopes that their accomplishments and en deavors will inspire someone else. + + ■+■ + + North Carolina’s “Visions” ma gazine recently featured several disabled volunteers. These volun teers give freely of their time, their energies and their knowledge of how it feels to have some portion of the body or a sense missing. Jimmy Pelzer was one young man featured. Each Monday from 6-8:30 p.m. Pelzer is at the Char lotte Rehabilitation Hospital's re creation room. Once there he en courages patients to play bingo, volleyball, and watch movies. He has organized talent shows in the past, and goes with patients on recreational trips. One of his favor ites is helping to coordinate discos. At the age of 11 Pelzer was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. One of his legs was amputated and the other one cannot be used. Perhaps you have seen him around Char lotte wheeling his gurney. He propels himself by turning the wheels on the stretcher. Pelzer is an intelligent young man and is now a student studying accounting. He wishes one day to enter this field. In addition to his intellect; be Is oner with-a big heart and encourages others to volunteer also. i i ■ • • ■ » I T X B. B. Parker is now chairman of the steering committee for the Council for Children. This committee has been formed to establish a non-profit corpora tioo to coordinate child care services in Mecklenburg County. Parker will be in charge of pro vijting resource and referral —With Teresa Burns Bits & Pieces Teresa services for parents, offering an array of support services to child care providers, and serving as a conduit for child care subsidies. Parker is a retired employee of Duke Power Company where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer from 1976-78. Other appointments to the steer ing committee include Rev George Battle, Charles J. Cooley ^ Ta Fisher, Cynthia Marshall, Jeffrey Miller, John A. Tate Jr., and Sandra Townsend. Patricia Lloyd is the Coordinator for the Council for Children. Call 372-7170 for more information. 4. a. .j Mercy Hospital has a new assist ant administrator for financial service and treasurer. Winslow Browning has accepted the posi tion and began work this month. Browning is the former comp troller-treasurer at Gaston Me morial Hospital in Gastonia. He is a 1959 graduate of the University of S.C. where he earned his B.S. degree in business. He is married and has three children. Browning replaces Martin G. Moore, who became vice president of. Baptist. Hospital in Pensacola Florida. --, + + + + + Charles Winter Magee Jr. of Matthews received his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Mississippi. He is among 637 candidates for degrees for the summer semester at the university. But there is one nurse who stands out. Omega Green, R.N., an assistant head nurse was honored when one of her surgical patients wrote a pleasing note about her. A portion of the note stated, “In particular I would tell you of Ms. Omega Green, who truly exempli fies the very best of her pro tession. She possessed not only the exceptional qualities of skill, competence and dedication, but is one of the most genuinely caring human beings that has ever been my privilege to know ..In her hands, nursing is more than an exemplary profession-it is a ministry.” Congratulations to Ms. Green - one caring person. + + + + + George E. Hill, president, Chief Executive Officer, Winston Mutual Life Insurance Co., Winston Salem, was elected President of the National Insurance Assocta tion (NIA) during the association’s annual meeting in Atlanta,Ga., recently. NIA, a trade association repre senting minority-owned insurance firms in 34 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands, is known as a strong economic force in Black communities.
