By Bill Johnson I SPORTS BEAT Hill Johnson TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS!. The reason some people can’t do their Christmas shopping early is they don’t know who their friends will be by holiday time!.. \ -List this reporter- among those who believes Dalis will win the Super Bowl next month and become the king of professional football. The way I figure it, the Cowboys have had their low moments and are not playing well at the moment. They, however, should pick themselves up to the level of play that projected them as the best team in all of football and get on with the business of chalking up victories. Another reason I like Dallas is its stingy defense....And Tony Dorsett...Any know ledgeable people in the game will readily tell you that defense is where it’s at in the world of football! SUDDEN THOUGHT - The end of the world will probably catch most of us promising to do better! Eddie Hurt, one of the all-time greats in black college coaching circles, was among the honorees at the first Golden Bear Roast at Morgan State College in Baltimore Monday night. Now in retirement, Hurt coached the Bears through 57 straight victories without a setback in the 50’s. Big David Pope is off to a great start with the Norfolk State basketball team. He hit 28 points in his first outing...Don’t be too surprised if the California Angles go after Reggie Jackson if the New York Yankee outfielder and Yankee owner George Stein brenner do not come to terms. Did you know that 52 rookies made the NBA teams this season? New Jersey and Dallas have five each. Darryl Dawkins, who was off to his best start since joining the Philadelphia 76ers, will be sidelined for a while with an injured knee. The top four leading rushers in the NFL - George Rogers, Tony Dorsett, Earle Campbell and Billy Sims - are all Heisman Trophy, winners! The great Muhammad Ali will celebrate his 40th birthday in late January, 54 days after he fights Trevoe Berbick at Queen Elizabeth Sports Center in Nassau, Baha mas Friday night ..What does that mean? Well, in my opinion, a 40-year-old does not have any business fighting anyone...not even his wife! Bill Davis will send his South Carolina State Bulldogs against Idaho State Saturday in the biggest contest of his illustrious coaching career. A victory in the contest, which will be televised regionally, will, project the Bulldogs into the NCAA 1AA Champiomship game in Wichita Falls, Texas, a week from Saturday. Bill ancj his Bulldogs are showing how small colleges in general and black colleges in particular can reap the countifui harvest of television/ richness. Progress would be faster if people could go forward on excuses! Curt Peter’s recent letter to the wh/te media regarding “better coverage to /he CIAA Football Championship Contest )fere November 21, was, in my opinion, odt of tune with the times. Mr. Peters completely overlooked or completely Ignored tl*b fact that the Charlotte Post gave the/ event major coverage through a 16-pagd insert that has received praise from /a wide variety of sources. In addition, he apparently did not read the seven pre-game stories that appeared in the Charlotte Observer the week of/the game. WBT and WBTV spent counties* man hours and a large sum of money promoting the game, even in what is generally regarded as “prime time.” / The point I’m making is that a crowd of 12,000 people does not mean very much to the white media. Even whan one rernent, bers that the local white m^dia went all out with the coverage of the championship game, it must be pointed out that the Black Press is the only media in Charlotte that fully concentrates on selling black products. I thought the dailies and the local radio ^stations gave exceptional coverage to tne Tgame and it is suggested here that each of you, especially the members of the West side Optimist Club and local CIAA offi cials, send letters / to the Charlotte Ob server, The Charlotte News, radio stations WBT and WSOC, as well as WBTV, WSOC-TV, and WPCQ-TV congratulating them for a job well done. They’re deserving of your enthusiastic support! SUBSCRIBE TO THE POST 'Call 376-0496 Today! TERRENCE J. MILLER ...Sensational eager Terrence J. Miller Is “Player Of The Week” By Chase Vance Post Sports Writer The first time I saw the kid, he was a ninth grader hitting a 30-foot jump shot to send a game with North west into overtime He has come a long way since then, but I predicted that one day he would be a viable force on the local basketball scene. Terrence Jeffrey Miller has graduated from junior high and now three years later, he is the helm of the North Mecklenburg Viking basketball team and this week’s Charlotte Post’s Basketball Player of the Week." The 5’8”, 145-pound senior who wears number 12 scored 26 points in his team’s 71-65 win over Mooresville at North and went to Mooresville to score 13 in tht Vikings’ 72-70 win. His expectations of the Vikings are high. "I think that in order to win, we mutt play as a team and keep out big men out of foul trouble," he remarked m referring to Raymond Philips, Junior Stinson and Charles Ma honey. , “I am going to trv hard to be a team player and take my points as they come," Millersaid. "1 want to win the conference, the play offs hnd then the state. I woigd like for us to take the wWle thing.” Tomorrow, the Vikings ptoy at Garinger one of the tougher teams in Ihe jbague according—to—his /.•oach, Leroy Holden, who /is credited with building up I his confidence. S.C. State Tackles Idaho State By Chase Vance Post Sports Writer The small crowd at South Carolina State's game with the Tennessee State Tigers sent the Bulldogs to the West Coast for the continu ation of Countdown To A Championship. In this semi-final match up with the Idaho State Bengals of the Big Sky Conference, the Bulldogs are an underdog. Idaho State was a 51-0 winner over Rhode Island last week while State was being put to the test by Tennessee State. Twelve thousand fans showed up at the Pocatello, ■Idaho;-Mini dome whieti— holds 15,000. And although it is cold in Idaho at this time of year don't fret because the Bulldogs will be playing on an artificial turf at room temperature. Coach Bill Davis' squad will play the winner of the Eastern Kentucky at Boise State game in the NCAA 1 AA championship game in Wichita Falls, Texas, Sa turday, December 19, if they win. file Bulldogs are strong. Quarterback Ben Mungin must have a good day if they are to win. He hit his receivers five of 12 times in the first playoff game for 105 yards Coach Holden told me." Miller added, "if you see an open shot, take it." Miller believes that the team's biggest competition will be Independence. South Mecklenburg, and West Charlotte in that order. On the Lions-Vikings rivalry, he stated. "I love to beat them. They beat us twice last year.but we are not going to let that happen again." Starting for his team as a junior has been his biggest sports thrill. Julius Erving is the sports star he admires the most. 'Julius Erving plays with poise," Miller ex claimed, "nothing excites him He is truly a team player.” Miller would like to play college ball one day like his brother Eric who plays for St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC. But for the time being he is taking it one step at a time with Garinger, Harding, Independence and the Myers Park tour nament being next on the agenda. _ . "That’s the shootout,” he revealed, "this is our first year in it and we would love to win it. We will if we play as a team." Premium. Imported.
