“The Words Of The Preacher”
By J. M. Little
‘THE WORDS OF THE
T HE' 'HER, the son of
Davn i:ing in Jerusalem.
Vamt> oi vanities saith the
Preacher, vanity of
vanities. all is vanity"
(F.cclesiastes 1:1-2). The
writer is King Solomon, the
son of David. Reading the
life of King Solomon in the
Scriptures, we find that he
was a man of great
wealth. We could say he
made an experiment with
the wealth of this world.
Solomon was the wisest
man since Adam. He goes
on to say in verse twelve of
this same chapter: “I the
Preacher was king over
Israel in Jerusalem.” The
Lord saw fit to place a
—preacher on the throne of
—Israel, his father David
was also a preacher on the
throne of Israel. But now
listen further to the
Preacher , ” And I gave my
heart to seek and search
out by wisdom concerning
all things that are done
under heaven: this sore
travail hath God given to
uie sons of man to be
exercised therewith. I have
seen all the works that are
done under the sun; and,
behold, all is vanity and
vexation of spirit. That
which is crooked cannot be
made straight: and that
which is wanting cannot be
numbered. I communed
with mine own heart, say
ing, Lo, I am come to great
estate, and have gotten
more wisdom than all they
that have been before me in
Jerusalem: yea, my heart
had great experience of
wisdom and know lege.”
(Vss 13-16).
King Solomon had all the
wealth that the human
heart could desire, but he
said, also; “And I gave my
heart to know wisdome,
and to know madness and'
folly; I perceived that this
also is vexation of spirit. ••
(Vs. 171. Solomon made an
experiment with wealth
and sin, but found both to
be vanity and vexation of
spirit. This goes to show
that the things of this world
cannot satisfy the human
. heart. You can indulge in
all the sin you want, and all
the business and pleasures
oTtbis world, they are all
vanity and vexation of
spirit and cannot All the
emptiness of heart. Only
the REVEALED Christ can
fill that emptiness in your
heart, my awakened
sinner.
When I was growing up in
the religious world, even
though I was religious to
the core, I knew there was
J-M. Little
an emptiness in my heart. I
set out to fill that emptiness
not knowing that only
Christ could satisfy the
emptiness there. I em
braced all the major reli
gions of the world. I prayed
and read my Bible. And
many times I’d be sitting
thee in church on Sunday
morning and the preacher
would say: “While I prav.
you pray to.” When I
would try to pray, the
heavens seemed like brass
to me and I felt a great gulf
between me and God.
Many times I wanted to cry
out right there in the
service; “my prayers are
not getting through!" Re
gardless of where I went or
what I did, the deep empti
ness was there in my heart.
I knew something was
missing that I lacked. -Not
until the blessed Holy
Spirit of God brought me
under Holy Spirit con vie
' tion did I realize what was
wrong. When the Holy
Spirit brought me under
conviction, He revealed to
me that the great missing
something in my life was
the reality of Christ. And
not until Christ was
revealed to my heart was I
satisfied. My life does not
consist of the abundance of
the things I possess, but of
Christ. You can have all
this world and its so-called
treasures and pleasures,
but I had rather have
Christ. I would not ex
“ change what I have n
Christ for ten thousand
worlds of gold and silver.
Would you? The greatest
thing in all the universe is
just to know the Lord Jesus
Christ as your Lord and
your Saviour. If you don’t
have Christ, you don’t have
anything.
You may boast of your
wealth, but listen to what
the Preacher, Solomon
said; “As he came forth of
his mother’s womb, naked
shall he return to go as he
came, and shall take
notning ol his labour, which
he may carry away with
his hand.’’ (Ecclesiastes
5:15). So, after laboring for
and attaining great wealth,
when you come down to die
you cannot carry a thing
with you. How is it going to
be with you when you come
to die? Do you know
Christ? Will it be said of
you that you died in the
Lord? Could I stand there
at your funeral and say you
went home to be with the
Lord?
Many times 1 sit and
think; what if I were not
saved? What if I had to
come down to the end of
life’s journey facing etern
ity unsaved without Christ?
I tell you friends, it would
be the most awful thing
that can happen to a soul. If
you come this way and fail
to come to know the Lord
Jesus Christ, it can be said
of you as it was of Judas;
“ft would have been better
for that man that he had
never been born.” People
are dying and leaving this
world. What about you?
Where are you going?
Where will you spend
eternity?
I’ll never cease to thank
and praise the Lord for
saving such a sinner as I. If
.Hre Lord had let me alone I
never would have been
saved. The only thing God
has to do for a sinner to go
to Hell is just leave the
sinner alone. Did you ever
think about it like that?
God doesn’t have to save
you, my friend. But, oh,
what mercy! Oh, what
love when He reaches down
to the bottom of the pit as it
were, and saves such a
