Skyyline’s Free
Time Becoming
V aluable Rarity
For Salsoul recording artists
Skyy. the band behind the No. 1
R&B single “Call Me" for the No. 1
R&B album "Skyyline,” so-called
free time is becoming a valuable
rarity In the past 12 months, the
band has toured, visited Africa,
toured again, rehearsed and re
corded their “Skyyline” album,
then rehearsed for their current
three month national tour. "So,"
explains Skyy singer and guitarist
Solomon Roberts Jr., "we really
haven’t had much time to do
anything else."
On the eve of a tour that will take
Skyy and Kool & The Gang across
the nation from California to the
EasLCaast, Sol, doesn’t see much
spare time ahead either. "When
we get home in May, it's back to
the studio again to make another
album. Then back out on the road,
hopefully overseas as well as in
America.”
So will Skyy find the time to
enjoy the success of "Call Me”
1982’.' Says Sol, "It doesn’t look like
this year we’ll even have time to
blow our noses!”

ClIRT JONES AND STARLEANA YOUNG
—Unique musical blend
Young And Talented
Curt Jones And Starleana Young
Stand Out From All The Rest

Two voices -- sensual and power
ful producing a subtle yet distinct
ive sound that only Curt Jones and
Starleana Young of the vocal group
Aurra can achieve, makes them
stand out from the rest
Young, talented. Aurra has
leaped into the 80 s with a unique
musical blend that speaks with an
urgency, an immediacy to the
times. And the people have re
sponded Their new single, "Make
Up Your Mind," has forced a lot of
people to decide that Aurra
represents what popular music is
and will be in the years to come
In the foreground of Aurra are
its lead vovalists Curt Jones and
Starleana Young Formerly lead
vocalists for Slave, Jones and Miss
Young hail from a musical en
vironment.
Jones' grandfather, Hershall
Davenport was a well-known big
band leader in the late 1940's and
early 195«'s and his aunts were
recorded with Motown during the
early days as the Davenport
Sisters. Miss Young however,
began singing in the church choir
in White Sulphur Springs, West
Virginia.
The two met live years ago
during the time Young was per
forming with a local band in
Orange, N.J and asked Miss
Young to join
This first encounter eventually
led to their gig with Slave and to
the special appeal Miss Young and
Jones seem to possess while per
forming on stage. “There is a
unique, musical chemistry there
that we picked up on the very first
time we sang together We've sort
of taken that initial- feel and
nurtured it into a vocal mar
riage.” explains M,iss Young
Hut Aurra does not wholly exist
on the talents of Jones and Miss
Young, a dynamic array of musi
cians. writers, producers and
singers complete Aurra's act. *
Undoubtedly the guiding force
behind Aurra is producer Steve
Washington. This 23 year-old
genius has toured as a trumpeteer
with the Ohio Players, formed the
soul group Slave and at the age of
17 was the proud owner of his first
gold single and album “Slave" and
“Slide." respectively He formed
Aurra in ivn ana tne group has
been climbing steadily ever since.
Other Aurra family members
arc Jennifer Ivory, the group's
lyricist and manager and Tom
Lockett, saxophonist.
"We've got all the components a
group needs to get to the top and
more importantly stay there -
writers, producers, singers, musi
cians - the whole show." stated
Curt Jones With that attidue pre

Earth, Wind & Fire
Wher)_Yerdine White of the ARC;
Columbia recording act Earth,
Wind and Fire arrived at rehears
als in Los Angeles for the band's
current 60-city tour of America (to
back their latest album, “Raise!”)
- he was surprised to learn from
the guard outside the rehearsal
hall that he couldn't go in Ver
dine White, the guard told him,
was already inside
After convincing the guard that
he was the real item. White dis
covered his name had been used to
gain entrance to the band's top
secret rehearsals by an imposter,
who was most apologetic when
apprehended Says White, “He told
me that he was sorry he ruined my
day. but that he really wished he
could be in my shoes.
