Gilbert Jalks About Druss By Mac Thrower -Post starr writer — - TV.star .Melissa-Gilbert, known as Laura Ingalls in her role on “Little House on the Prairie,” went to the White House recently to talk about teen-age drug abuse. Miss Gilbert wanted to publicly express her concern about what shecalls “the epidemic of drug use among young people in this country.” The 17-year-old star of the NBC series, has traveled from the entertainment world of Southern California to the nation’s capitol to take a stand on the drug abuse problem and to serve as the national spokesperson for the ACTION Drug Prevention Pro gram, sponsored by ACTION, the national volunteer agency. After meeting with ACTION officials, Miss Gilbert met with First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House and discussed ways to combat the drug problem. There s a big push now for health and being beautiful; look ing good and having wonderful, healthy bodies. Most people I know in the entertainment field don’t want to abuse their bodies with drugs,” Miss Gilbert told report ers at a news conference at ACTION. She talked about peer pressure, saying it “...really is a very difficult thing to deal with... because acceptance is very im portant.” But she advised other teens to do what she does and say “I’m not going to do what I don't want to do. I just say ‘no.’ I find my friends eventually come around... they respect me for my position." Miss Gilbert commented that entertainers should set an example “because we are in a position where we get a lot of publicity, a lot of people know who we are and what we do. I think it's important that they know that we don't do drugs." As one reporter pointed out, Miss Gilbert is not the typical teenager. She played the role of Laura In galls on “Little House” for the past eight years and has starred in such TV movies as "The Dairy of Anne Frank" and “The Mfracle Work site has the same kinds of pro - blems growtngTjp that other young people do. “We all have problems," she said. "Everybody has an excuse to use drugs. But you have to face up to your problems and work them through. Drugs are only hiding They're a way of copping out. Nothing is that awful, nothing is that horrible that it won’t go away. Drugs are only going to make everything more complicated.” Mark Hamill Stars In WBTV Saturday Movie Mark Hamill stars as a high school student who embarks upon a journey to search for the stolen white Corvette that he and his friends have lovingly customized, in ‘‘Corvette Summer,” to be re broadcast on “The CBS Saturday Night Movies,” Saturday, April 24, at 9 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. Kenneth W. Dantley (Hamill) and his friends, with the help of their shop teacher (Eugene Roche), rescue a junked Corvette. With the lavish attention and ob sessive behavior of car-crazed youins, they rebuilt and re designed it until the car is truly the auto of their dreams Suddenly the car disappears. When Kenneth hears that their unique creation has been spotted in Las Vegas, he takes off after it. Annie Potts stars as Vanessa, a young woman traveling alone in her van who picks up the hitch hiking Kenneth. What starts as an xiieasy alliance eventually blooms into the real romance of Kenneth's Ufe.
