WHAT’S HAPPENING!! TOURNAMENT FUN.... The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain, a popular line that emerged among the many songs of the hit musical, “My Fair Lady. The rain in Charlotte falls mainly on the golf courses, a popular line that emerged among the thoughts of many golfers last Saturday afternoon. One of the courses where the April showers caused some uneasiness and some drenched golfers was the Revolution Golf Course on Bar ringer Drive. The members of the Athletic Department of Walls Memorial AME Zion Church Were experiencing the success of their fourth annual invitational golf tournament at that — time. A tournament that fielded nine adults and two junior teams in an 18 holes captain s choice. For the benefit of non-golfers, a cap tain’s choice game pits the skills of each effort against the golf .^course. It is the cap:, tain of the team’s ' decision to determine which ball to play aftpr each shot is— made. Each player - hits his next ball from that spot, and so on BOBJOHNSON until the playing of the hole is completed. Theoretically, the teams consist of players with different levels of ability, which adds to the competitive fun. The teams for last Saturday’s tourna ment included four players. Each deter mined to do his share to win one of the gold statues waiting back at the clubhouse for the members of the four teams carding the lowest 18-hole score. The team of Bobby Ellis, Ed MitcheU, Raymond Mason, and Louis “Gray Beard” Rorie won the tournament with a 14 under par score of 58. Second place was undis putedly won by the team of Alvin Grier, James Bouler, Arthur Moore and John Staley with a 12 underpar 607 ‘ The team of Donald Littlejohn, Johnny Williams, “Big” Carl Love and Dave Taylor Sr., with a late starting time, had a mathematical chance to catch the winners after a nine-hole score of 30. However, rain interrupted their second round after they birdied the first two holes. When play resumed after about 45 minutes, the con ditions of the course possibly kept this team from continuing their birdie roll. The 31 they eventually shot put them in a three way tie for third place. The stage was set for a three team playoff. But, due to the lateness of the hour and the condition of the weather, the results had to be played off on the score card. This means that the teams with the lowest hole-by-hole score on holes already played would capture third and fourth places. The team of Donald Littlejohn, Johnny Williams, Carl Love and Dave Taylor Sr., locked in on third place because they birdied the first hole. Robert “Git” Brown, Tom Fraylon, Raymon Fewell and Robert Chisholm were the members of the team that took fourth place because they birdied the par 3 number two hole. Lee Hood, Joseph Hill, John Lathan and Brice Ardrey also shot a score of 61. Unfortunately though, their first birdie didn’t come until the third hole. The other teams included Herman Fant, Thomas Springs, Rev. Lloyd Morris and Erwin Springs Jr. with a team score of 62. Simon Hooper, Bill Adams, Bob Johnson and Haze Moore with a score of 64. Don Beamer, Doug Beamer, A1 Houston and Joe Wilson with a score of 65. The rain cancelled the final few holes for Peter Thomas, Charles Camp, Jennings Brewer and Marshall Little. The Junior Division of the tournament was won by the team of Adrian Roseboro, Danny Evans, Gene Lawrence and David Taylor Jr. with an 18-hole score of 70. The Fourth Walls Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament wouldn’t have been as successful as it was had it not been for the efforts of some key people - William Givens, director of athletics; Haze Moore, tourna ment coordinator; Sandra Williams, Annie Bellinger and Dorothy Moore, tournament managers.
