Bill Johnson^^—— SPORTS BEAT BIU Johnson $1.98 HAP SESSION. Is there such a thing as being too clever? Put me in the category with those who firmly believe that Georgetown coach John Thompson is deserving of the Humanitarian Award, of the Year. Who can forget that toucHBlg moment in the NCAA Champion ship Finals when Thompson caressed the young man who inadvertently threw the ball and ultimate victory away with only a few seconds left. That was a remarkable thing for a coach of a losing team to do, especially when he’s just watched perhaps the biggest championship of his lifetime slip away. I never cease to amaze at the numerous excuses being given by local supporters of the Johnson C. Smith athletic program as to why the Golden Bulls do not need a booster club to provide extra funds to enhance their resources. Among the most prevalent are the statements that elude reality: “J.C. Srnitn does not neetrany more money,' ' and, “Bill Johnson does not like Smith, he does -not-know what.he’s talking about.” Well, maybe so! But, I have yet to meet aW individual nor have I seen an institution mai aoes not neea or want more money. It’s a known fact that the schools that pour more money in their athletic budgets are the ones that win charnpionships. Ever given any thought as to what is a “perfect” fan? A “perfect” fan, in my opinion, is not the fair weather kind. Nor the overzealous and certainly not the sore losers. A “perfect” fan is one who supports ~his team-thrniigh-gftftfL-and hfld tinups, f>np who purchases tickets to the athletic events and not seek out free passes. Did you know that Cheyney State coach ' Vivian Stringer has been named female Coach of the Year? It’s a first for Black America. John Thompson earlier earned the male Coach of the Year honors, making it tfieTirst time in modem times that blacks have captured the highest honors college basketball has to offer. Right on! Tommy Hearns is a heavy favorite to kayo world middleweight champion Marvin Ifegler when the two meet for the title May «. Talk about dynasty. Hampton has won an incredible 69 straight CIAA Tennis _ matches since 1967, including its first nine this season:________ The Pirates have shut-out 55 opponents during the period. Has North Carolina A&T State dropped J. C. Smith from its 1982 football schedule? The Golden Bulls have the Aggies listed for a home game Saturday night, October 2 at Charlotte Memorial Stadium, but word is out that the game has been cancelled and that JCSU and Grambling are dickering for a football game this fall. Smith has an open date on Saturday, October 23. Florida A&M athletic director Roosevelt Wilson is calling the revised NCAA Division 1AA football playoffs “an unfair proposal.” It seems that when the NCC’s proposal to expand its playoff field from eight to 16 teams, it left Florida A&M and Bethune Cookman out in the cold. Under the plan these schools would be ineligible because the playoffs begin the week of November 28. That’s the date arch-rivals FMU and Bethune-Cookman stage their annual clash that annually attracts more than 45,000 fans. Remember Pat Kelly, the fleet outfielder who began his baseball career with the old Charlotte Hornets? Following his release by the Cleveland Indians last week, Kelly says he’ll enter divinity school and start a new career as a minister. Florida A&M outfielder Vincent Coleman stole seven bases against Alabama State recently to establish a new NCAA record for stolen bases in a single contest. Bum Phillips, who should know, says the differ ence between Earl Campbell and George Rogers is that Rogers ‘‘sees daylight” and Campbell “makes daylight.” Rudy Abrams is no longer serving with the Johnson C. Smith University football coaching staff....Wonder why? Another of Wylie Harris’ assistants is rumored to resign any day now. Neill Gordon called to inform that neither he nor his staff members have actively recruited Bill Tibbs, Johnson C. Smith’s outstanding eager. The successful Winthrop College mentor says he was approached by coach Bob Moore and JCSU SID Phil Busher. Bet you didn’t know that more than 30 colleges and universities will have new head basketball coaches next season. Or that NBA teams owe players more than $90 million in deferred payments. Look for Sly Williams to file for bankruptcy in the very near future. Deep-rooted family problems are the probable cause. Former baseball great Andrew Brewton is enjoying himself at the Charlotte Metts-Charlotte Red Birds semi-pro baseball game last Sunday afternoon. A former pitcher, Mr Brewton has served as Commissioner of the league and as manager of several teams during his illustrious career. Triple County Headliner Metts Wallop Red Birds *ii^ auigmg tnarioue Metts walloped the Char lotte Red Birds, 9-2, here Sunday afternoon behind the strong pitching of right handers Thomas Gordon and Ricky Carelock and the timely hitting of Carelock. In addition to limiting the Red Birds to a pair of singles while striking out seven, Carelock poled—a homerun and three singles to account for five RBI’s. He was-dtbat-flvetimes. — In the meantime, Gor don, who posted his first win of the young season, jdlowed only three singles during ms tive-inning stay. He fanned six and walked only one. "We have a very young team that is playing real well," offered manager Walter Wallace, who show ered praise on left fielder Murphy Falls and short stop Anthony Oliver. “Mur phy is making the good, defensive plays,” ~fie~' praised, Oliver, he said, "is doing a heck of a job on defense.” Wallace's team is in hot pursuit of the Triple County Hoskins Giants and the Charlotte Bombers. "We’ll get our chances this weekend," Wallace pointed out. His team goes against the hard-hitting Giants Sunday afternoon in Hoskins. However, one day earlier, the Metts will take on the Bombers at their Southside Playgrounds home field. Each game starts at 3 p.m. Jody "JR7” Robinson will pitch against the Bombers and Gordon will start against the Giants. In High Spirit! Golden Bulls Hang Up Spring Practice Uniforms Now that the Johnson C. Smith football team has hung up its spring practice uniforms, what is the early grade report on the 1982 Golden Bulls squad? "rfeel pretty good about this bunch,” remarked head coach Wylie Harris “We've got 15 starters back, but the upcoming sophomore class looks like they will be winning some of those positions.” Sophomore linebackers Craig Warren and Wayne Tillerson won't be denied playing time. “They have super instincts and are physical hitters,” graded one coach. Sophomore tackle Robert Wright_ (6'4“, 280 pounds) has been playing both sides of the line. Charles Brumfield will start at center, en abling veteran Richard Shankle to move to the tackle position. Two other sophomores have already made names for them selves Runningback Darrell Wesley gained 829 yards and will be aiming for 1,000 in 1982. Split end KetrWhite-wHfrival three time All-CIAA wide receiv er Nate McDowell for most “catches this year. _ Golden Bulls strength in 1982 will be the best receiving corps in the CIAA directed by the confer ence s number one passer. John Henry Thomas. Al though the linebacker unit is young, it is the strongest and has the best depth in recent years. Stephone Darby, Donnie Brown, Stephone Jones and Ed Funderburk round out the unit Johnson C. Smith follow ers will find plenty familiar names in uniform. Tight end Ed McN'eely and speedster Vince Casey complete the receiving unit. Tackle Kenneth Jones will start his third, straight year on the right side of the offensive line. Last year the best strong safetyHin the CIAA was" Steve Gray, who led the conference in tackles and interceptions until a knee injury in the sixth game All-CIAA free safety Alveraz Abernathy pro vides the Bulls with a solid one, two punch deep in the middle. The 1981 defensive line was plagued with injuries and became the Achilles heel of the Bulls. Sopho more Kelvin Davis will help shore up the line with veterans Alvin Ellington, Darryl Kornegay, Reggie Williams and the return of All-American Daniel Beau ford. The offensive line will break in several new faces in replacing James Hair ston and Ray Ellis Several newcomers will battle for the cornerback spots '*we_ve ‘got""a-”larger"~ nucleus of veterans in which to build around than the past two years," noted Harris.
