Great Deal Of Imagination Went Into “Menia’s Bash” MENIA’S BASH... The faculty of imagination is the great spring of human activity, and the principal source of human improvement. As it delights in presenting to the mind scenes and characters more perfect than those which we are acquainted with, it prevents us from ever being completely satis fied with out present condition, or with our past attainments, and engages us continually in the pur suit of some untried enjoyment, or some ideal excellence^ ' A great deal of imagination went into the construction of Menia’s Bash. For those of you who may not know what Menia’s (Mena’s) Bash was, it was a delightful birthday party honoring Wilhel menia Roper Adams. As the guests approached Mrs. Adams’ lovely home, 1819 Baxter Street, they were greeted by a huge banner that read WELCOME TO MENIA’S BASH. The banner was white with red and blue lettering. It had two large deep purple orchids with pink throats and dark green leaves emblazoned on it. Printed at the bottom left hand corner, was the year 1924 representing the year Menia was born. The year 1982 was printed in the corner on the right, represent ing this anniversary year. Mrs. Adams’ friends, not being satisfied with the usual conditions of an annual occurrence, put their minds together and developed this ''delightful scenario. They brought platters of delicious bors d’ oeuvres and a wide assortment of beverages.. Sarah Stevenson played the role of chef, and made sure everyone had as much of the tasty fried fish, cole slaw and rolls they wanted. Billye Roper and Ruth Fletcher, sisters of Wilhel menia, were the hostesses. We must suit ourselves to its fantastic tastes. But being compelled to live under its spontaneous laws, the wise man is never the first to follow, nor the last to keep them. The Extraordinaire Civic and Social Club sponsored an extrava gant evening of “Fashion and Entertainment” recently at the Excelsior Club. The purpose wasn’t to dictate to the guests whether they should be first or last in the fashion arena. The purposes, however, were to raise money to benefit the McCrorey Branch YMCA and to show the guests that fashion is the science of appear ance. The Ebony fashion organization dressed 18 models whose pseudo-— nyms read like a dairy bar's Ice cream list; brown glaie, butter nut cream, tropical delight, passionate raisin, sweet carmel, classic copper, honey amber, copper glow, golden nector, earth brown and brown sugar. The group used professional models, experienced models and amateurs for the guests to observe the causual look, today’s leisure and sport look, swimwear, dressy and formal wear. Phil Gary, whose mother and grandparents were in the audience was the male model who received the overwhelming approval from a vocal audience. Bernitta Morgan, an exciting self-taught model, was the female crowed pleaser. Pas sionate Raisin as she is called says the key to her electrifying style is that she really enjoys people and entertaining. The fashion show was just a portion of the evening’s amuse ment. Music has charms to soothe . the savage breast, to soften rocks and bend the knotted oak, as the saying goes. With that thought in mind, “The Extraordinaries” gar- i nered the services of George Ezell 1 and Bill Ford on saxophones, Joe Harper on drums, Matthews Smith on piano and Dave Young on bass, for the jazz session. The real crowd pleasing tunes rendered by the local combo were the haunting ballad--“Danny Boy,” and a lilting version of the legehdary "Sum mertlme ”-r Stevie Russell and Dawn Black’s , animated youth over-flowed naturally in harmonious move- j ments, as they entertained the guests with a dance that had to take elaborate preparation to exe cute as well as they did.
