Dr. Bynum Is Proud To Be Mrs. Thelmetia Bynum’s Husband! By Lori Grier Post SUff Writer With the completion of six series featuring women who are married to famous and successful men in Charlotte, it is quite dis appointing to know that only two men, Mr. Joseph Crosby and Mr. Clayton Perry, were willing to be featured about their famous and successful wives. This week Dr. Raleigh Bynum gladly par ticipates in our series. There must be more men in the Queen City who are proud of their wives and their accomplishments. Black history notes that throughout the years wo men have been the back bone of not only their families, but other fami , lies as well. So come on men, speak up! Don’t let your ego, pride, manliness or whatever it is that’s holding you back prevent you from honoring your lady. If she’s famous and successful, we’d like to know about her and share her with our readers. Dr. Raleigh Bynum, 47 year-old optometrist, is the husband of Mrs. Thelmetia nynum, cuiaance coun selor at Eastway Junior High School. She is also a Deaconess at Friendship ; Baptist Church, certified in cardiopulmonary resusci tation, member of the National Council of Negro { Women and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. He and I Thehnetia, married for 21 years, have three children Raleigh, 15; Zerrick, 12 and ' Monjya, 13. They met in 1961 in Washington, D.C. "Her brother, James Ar grett, and I were in the high * school band together. After \ I graduated from college, she was still a student in college. I was a friend of l the family,’’ mentioned ■* Raleigh. Her intelligence is what convinced him that she "{would eventually become his wife. ‘Tve always ad mired people who could think. When we went out on a date, I realized that she was my type of person. We had good, intellectual dis ne aoesn t Deneve that and her career ‘^ MTaiuiuB he loses out, because, “I’m relatively secure in what I do and how I’m dealt with by her and others. I don’t mind step ping back, because it does me well to see her doing well.” According to Raleigh, Jealousy doesn’t exist in their home. “Being secure and knowing where I stand * in life makes it easy. She’s my wife, and it makes md proud to be her husband. I think I may have helped bar along the way.” He affirms that he han’t lost his identity or self-esteem. “I enjoy being incognito and feel good being with *- •*“ *^ sim Dr. Raleigh Bynum .County Commission candidate Eighth in series ed.” Knowing about bis wife’s business is extremely im portant, “especially when things don’t .go like she wants them to. I can ap preciate it more and help her forget about a bad day with drinks, dinner, ...” He recommends that peo ple should be good listen ers for each other. "I’ve always felt that people should be good listeners. Many husbands in general have the reputation of not listening. Thelmetia and I try to listen to each other.” 'Hiere is no doubt that Raleigh considers his career as rewarding as his wife considers hers. “This is why we don t allow jealousy. Both of us are from Florida, and we have common hobbies- flying (both are licensed instru ment rated pilots), skiing and walking around the neighborhood for exercise, in the woods in the fall and in the mountains with the - kids.” It depends upon the issue before a power strug gle oecurs in their mar riage. “I have found it advantageous at times to act acquiescent. I couldn’t live with someone for 21 years to see who’ll have the last word. I soon discov ered that some things are not worth hassling about.” His wife’s success may have interfered with family plans and activities “when our kids were younger. Now we tend to make plans around each other. We try to decide if some affairs are important enough for both of us to be present.” Mrs. Bynum’s success has added a positive aspect to her family. “Because of her success I see a num ber of patients in my of fice who were her stu dents. It helps in the community and with our youngsters. They (young sters) see that she’s happy and content, and it makes them happy that they’re part of this kind of fa mily. Our friends comment on the happy nature of our family.” The rewards of having a successful wife are “notoriety. I’m known as Mrs. ByB urn’s husband, but that’s OK. Because I’m her husband a cashier and sales clerk at a depart ment store went an extra mile to help me find a suit.” The disappointments occurred when they got married. “The things I looked forward to as far as in a successful marriage eluded me. I looked for a traditional wife in a home surrounded by a white fence. Because of her ideas about what she want ed, I had to adjust.” Life today for Tbelmetia and Raleigh compared to those struggling times Is “much closer, because the crises have brot^ht us closer. We have gotten closer mentally. I don’t necessarily have to ask her how things went on her job, because I can look fet her and tell. I look forward to our 25th and 50th fvedding anniversaries so that we can reflect on those tedious days." If Raleigh could marry Career Education Program Held The Charlotte Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority held a Career Education Program for its 1984 Debu tants at the Greenville Center.
