He began his career in education in 1939 as a sixth grade teacher in the East Belmont (N.C.) Elemen tary School, followed by a tour in the U.S. Army, two years as a math teacher at North Wilkesboro High School and four years as a principal in Bessemer City (N.C.). An officer can give you the basics of the program, come out and talk with you and your neighbors and give each of you a free home security survey. After everyone in the community is enrolled in the program, the police will erect signs warning would be criminals that they’re entering a “totally in volved community.” OTHER COMMON-SENSE IDEAS Don't display expensive items; keep them out of sight when not in use. A safety-deposit box can pro vide the best security. Don’t advertise gifts or new purchases such as TV sets and microwave ovens by leaving boxes at the curb. Break up boxes be fore discarding them. Don’t hide a spare key near the door, above the ledge, under a flowerpot or mat. These are the first places a burglar will look. Keep ladders locked in the garage. Keep screens and win- ' dows fastened from the inside. Don’t open your door to strangers. Be wary of soli citors and salesmen; check their identification If strangers ask to use the telephone, tell them to stay outside while you make the calls for them.
