These, in ad dition to other sweet and bitter memories, will be relived by the members of the 80 year-old Swank Social Club during their celebration of the club’s Golden Anniversary. First on the agenda is praise to God for allowing the 17 members such Messing! throughout the years. A worship aad praise service will be held Sunday, January 22, during the 11 a.m. worship ser vice at Greater Gethse mane AME Zion Church, 881 Campus St., Rev. George E. Battle, Jr., pastor. A reception in honor of Swank members will follow. A dinner has been planned for members and their wives and will be held at McDonald’s Cafeteria. According to Gerson L. There were many clubs being formed but the six charter members were too young to Join any, so they formed their own. During the 1990’s, the name Swank represented the exclusive line of male Jewelry. It only seemed fitting to use the name for an exclusive club as well Within the 50 years, there have been at least 50 affiliates. At first the acti vities were centered around social functions and fellowship among members. This is still the case today, but there^are also added ingredients. The club has broadened its in terests to include civic responsibilities such as furnishing a room at the Old McCrorey YMCA; donating to the United Ne gro College Fund and the present YMCA and the ... ■ — — - Mecklenburg Court Volun teers and other similar or ganizations. Members of the Swank Club have excelled in their professions over the years. They have ranked as doc tors, dentists, lawyers, educators, contractors, businessmen, insurance, housing, employment and postal a dm ins tra tors, ac countants, chemists, ministers and pharma cists. Jack stem Flaw To Retire fhirtnttt Merlrknhrg School System principal Dr. Jack Starn, currently principal at J. H. Ounn Elementary School, will re tire, effective February 1, MM, altar nearly 40 years at service in the local school system at J.H. Gunn Elementary since 1978. Dr. Stern joined CMS in September, 1M7 as a musk teacher and served in that capacity at Alexander Graham, Central High School and Garinger High School. In 1963, Dr. Stem was appointed Assistant Principal at Garinger High School. In 1967, Dr. Stem be came principal at Sedge field Junior High School, followed by a principalship at Garinger High School in 1970 and several system wide administrative posi tions from 1973 to 1976 when be was named principal at J. H. Gunn Elementary. Jack 5tern has a long and distinguished record of service to our school system,” Superintendent Dr Jay Robinson said. “He is widely recognized as an exceptionally competent educational leader at all levels. “His retirement is a great loss to our school system and to our com munity, but, it is well de served and we all wish him well,” Dr. Robinson concluded. Dr. Stern received his B.A. in music from Brook lyn College (N.Y.) in 1942 and was awarded both a Master’8 Degree (1948) and an Ed.D. (1966) from Teachers College, Colum bia University in New York. During the 1955-56 academic year. Dr. Stern served on a Ford Foun dation Fellowship. He is married to Anne and the father of two sons, and the grandfather of four.
