Jenkins Gospel Choir will present its Third An nual Gospelrama honoring Charlotte native Annie Rose Poole. This services begins at 5 p.m. The choir, under the leadership of Geraldine Dykes Daniel, will have an unveiling and dedication of a plaque commemorating the induction of the Gospel Spiritual Hall of Fame Artists including Annie Rose Poole and many local misicians. ine nail 01 t ame was established in 1961 to show appreciation for the Mu sicians in the Charlotte area who have demonstrat ed exceptional dedication 1 to Gospel and Spiritual music. At the annual con cert in 1963, disc jockey Robert Harris of radio station WPEG and Bill Johnson of The Charlotte Post were honored for their loyalty and support for Gospel and Spiritual mu sic in the Charlotte area. Choir members were in spired to honor Mrs. Poole by John Yorl of the Char lotte Observer and Grace Stevenson, former Char lotte-Mecklenburg school teacher and a member, of C. N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Poole, often re ' ferred to as Charlotte’s - Mahalia Jackson, has served the community for 40 years. She was the first soloist to sing weekly on radio station WGIV in 1948. She was the official song leader for the N.C. State NAACP for six years. She organised the Spiritual Choir at St. Paul Baptist Church where she is now assistant music director under the leadership of pastor Dr. Paul W. Drum mood. Former baseball player Jackie Robinson was so taken by Mrs. Poole that he arranged for her to apoaar at the AppoUo Theatre and . Carnegie Hall in New York City. It was fulfilled through Kelly Alexander, Sr., chairman of the Na tioma NAACP. ’•WB. *-ooie nas starred in various plays and film pro ductions at Central Pied mont Community College ' and the Little Theatre in Charlotte. She received a 1 degree in Religion from Teamer’s School of Reli gion, an associate degree in Applied Science from Central Piedmont and is presently working on • Bachelor's degree in Un man Services at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Charlotte.
