|— s«y James CuUibertsonfi=S9= mm (fatten. James • When you are as old as I am, life repeats itself so much that nothing much is original or new. Or so I thought. In all the years that I have covered basketball, I have witnessed several over time and double overtime thrillers, but never a triple overtime. . Olympic’s never-say-die Trojans in desperate need of a conference win to maintain hopes of a high first division finish and North’s homestanding Vikings also in a quest for a similar position, were locked neck and neck like bulls going at it in a cow pasture. The Vikings won the thriller that both teams had several chances to win, 87-85 before an exhilarated crowd in the Viking gym. ■ With the Trojans leading by two in the first overtime with 26 seconds left on the clock, Bobby Junior went to the line and missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Vikings scored to even the score at 57. With the score. tied &t 67 after the end of the second overtime, both teams fouled up last minute scoring opportunities to go into' the third. I Clarence Bryce had a great game for North Mecklenburg, hitting several key caskets and scoring 29 points. Todd Holden was outstanding in over time for the Vikings. The sophomore scored 11 key points. Herman Springs led the Trojans with 24, hitting a key shot to give Olympic a chance in die second overtime after they had fought back from a six point deficit. Antonio Howard of Olympic showed that * one day soon he will be a force to be reckoned with. Howard scored 17 points, shooting relentlessly over a North Meck lenburg zone. - This was one of the most exciting games that I have witnessed in high school .basket ... In 1«?6, Olympic lost in double overtime to Hubs of Gastonia. The score was on that team werejGene Harris, fiance, Donald Snfitb and JefK and Dwight Allen. ■ The girls’ game preceding the boys at North was a good one also. The Vikings beat Olympic 51-48. Wanda Simmons had 16 and Veronica Harris had 14 for Olympic. Maline Me jaore had 15 and Lisa Crawford had 14 for • the Vikings. l&j /. .Ft*: —. — __ ;• -The Independence Patriots are on the J hiove. It won't be as easy as it was last year, but the Pats are in a good position to fight for the conference championship. Harrell Patterson fe an outstanding ball player. He is complemented by Brad Smith, Chip Ferguson, Keith Simpson and James Jett. Dave Chris ten bury does a great job keeping his squad ready. " v • - . • „«r * ■1 ■ —■ ' ■ — . .1 don’t like to criticize referees, but the officiating this year in the Southwestern 4A is some, of the worse that I have seen in x years. Officials are missing obvious call* in \ crucial situations such as pushing the de fensive men down when being guarded, pushing off on layup attempts, and general ‘‘hacking” under the basket. Po<m* officiat ing makes a game much less enjoyable. Blue chip basketball players in the conference are Clarence Bryce of North Mecklenburg; Herman Springs, Antonio Howard ahd Gene Young of Olympic; Willie Walker and James Elmore of Garinger; Terry Conner of East Mecklenburg; Roman Phifer of South Mecklenburg; Milton Moore of West Mecklenburg; Don Sibby of Harding; Paul Grier and Haywood Workman of Myers Park; Terry Nance, Maurice Caldwell, Mike Cureton and Lance Jones of West Charlotte and Keith Simpson and Harrell Patterson of Independence. THE RANKINGS . .1. Independence - The Patriots are back. • • 2. Myers Park - The Mustangs are ttttMi. 3. West Charlotte - The Lions are solid. . .4. North Mecklenburg - The Vikings are on a tear. 5. Harrell Pattera “Player Of Tha* By James Cathbertson Pest Sports Writer Harrell Patterson of In dependence is excited about his senior basketball season. “It is different from last year, because I am start ing now and there is more pressure on me to per form,” he said. “Last year, I came in to give one of the starting five a rest and with the good team that we had, there wasn’t much pressure.” Patterson is a 8’4”, 205 pounder who is averaging 17 points and 11 rebounds per game from his center position. “Coach Dave Christen bury has helped me by telling me to shoot every time I get a chance,” he said. “He told me to do the things that I can do best.” Patterson’s strengths are his 15-foot jump shots and the ability to move to the basket. his sophomore year, the Patriots went to the state where they lost to Page of Greensboro. Last year, Page put a stop to the team in the semifinals. This year, he hopes the Patriots go all the way. He said the teams to beat are Myers Park and West Charlotte. "If we can make it through the break with an 8-1 record, we will be right on schedule with last year’s team,” said this week’s Charlotte Post Player of the Week.
