Iwill have cancer this year
Because of advances in
medical research, there
will be cures for many.
Getting to the cures, how
ever, may be a problem.
“One cancer patient re
quiring radiation therapy,
could need anywhere from
20 to 30 trips in six weeks,”
said Mary Pinson, coordin
ator of the American Can
cer Society’s Volunteer
Transportation Corps for
the Mecklenburg Unit. “A
patient receiving chemo
therapy might report for
. ; treatment weekly for up to
f ta year. In most cases, a
patient is tfriven to hos
pita is or elinics by rela
;• tives or friends, but many
people In our community
have no transportation at
all- That’s where Road To
Recovery comes in.”
Road To Recovery is a
Program of volunteers who
drive patients to treat
ment centers and home
again. The Mecklenburg
Unit is trying to recruit
more volunteers to insure
that all patients have trans
porta ticn when they need
it, according to Mrs.
Pinson. .
“Our volunteer drivers
took 72 cancer patients to
694 treatment appoint
ments last year. They pro
vide a wonderful service,
but we still have to turn
down requests for trans
portation each week. We
need more drivers so we

the school board will not
-permit other schools in
Mecklenburg County to
adopt the same type pro
gram. !‘t)ilworth’s pro
gram has existed for al
Tnoit six years,” he said.
'“If other schooTs'cant be
provided with the same
t progrmp, then the pro
grams should be nonexist
ent altogether.”
Griffin emphasized he is
-totally jn favor of the
after school program, but
the only fair way it can be
administered is for the
school board to approve
; more programs in various
schools where it’s desired.
Another concern which
; Griffin expressed was in
creasing teachers’ salary
to national level. For most
teachers that would mean
• about a $3,500 increase.
“Teachers in Mecklen
burg County are under
paid,” Griffin stated
frankly. “If a teacher has
to leave at the end of a
school day and go to work
at a part-time job, then
there’s little time , if any,
' for that teacher to prepare
fhee students' next- dey4*-*
lesson.”
Griffin’s opinion is “If
some teachers didn’t have
; to obtain extra employ
’ ttient to ’ ntake a decent
living, they'would be able
to devote more attention to
students.”
All of the concerns which
Griffin expressed about the
school, led to his fourth
issue-leadership. "The
„ school board lacks effect
iveness in several areas of
the county,” Griffin
argued.
“Ifhis board doesn’t ac
tively aeek out partner
ships with the community,
or with the county com
misioners.” Griffin com
mented the school beard
should make more appeals
to the county commis
sioners as a funding
Spurce.
;vHe believes the school
board should also be more
effective in assessing what
communities want in their
schools.
“Leadership is taking the
time to talk to people and
making them feel they are
a part of what’s going on,”
Griffin defined. “For every
non-televised school board
meeting, the school board
should go into a different
community and have its
meetings.
Griffin was referring to
the rotation method which
the City Council uses, one
he feels is effective and
necessary. “Leadership
should provide hope, not
hopelessness,” the candi
date urged.
Griffin, 35, is a member
of several civic organiz
