Dr. Dawkins Believes Black People Have Not Been Properly Recognized By Korea Parker Pool Staff Writer When Dr. Rosamuel Dawkins wrote Ms term paperinmedicalocbool.be steered from the tradition al topics such as the latest discovery in medicine or one of the most popular physicians ever to exist cians who were never known by anything but Simon and Ceasar. “The earliest practices of medi cine began in Africa, and \ people like Simon and Ceasar prepared a rich feast of ideas and prac tices in metfidne," Daw kins claimed. As he pointed out in his research paper, it’s unfor tunate while Simon and Cenaar were significant in the preparation of the me dical feast, they were never “allowed to eat at die table and benefit from / their contributions." Dawkins has been select ed as an achiever for The Charlotte Peat Mack hi story issue. Not only in ' medicine^ but in every .profession, Dawkins be lieve* blacks hav^not been properly recognised for their contributions to society. “In spite of the way we (blacks) came to America and in spite of our sup pression inherent by slav ery, we have contributed to music, science, literature, politics and more," Daw kins insisted. “TWs needs to be written in the history books and taught to people, so if far no other reason, it will serve as a point of inspiration to our present generation." Siam black httory can’t be found in the average reference materials, Daw kins believes' “the whole gamut-everytUng in black achievement—should be taught in the home.”. i oon i Diame me puouc school system entirely,” Dawkins admitted. “Blame begins in the home. As John Hope Fran klin once stated, T put blame for children’s lack of knowledge of black history in the homy. Don’t leave it up to the school system.” “Ail indications reveal black men discovered the American continent long before Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492,” Daw ' kins pointed out. He added, “Columbus Just left his family here.” These are the kinds of facts which Dawkins be lieves no one should grow up not knowing, even if they’re not taught in school. Dawkins, a medical doc tor and surgeon, completed his fellowship training at. Howard University. He re ceived his bachelor at sci ence degree at North Carolina Central Univer sity, and was an intern at Harlem HnppHal Center. He also attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine and Kalamazoo Medical School. Dawkins and his wife, Hazel, spend hours of their time in their hone reed ing from their collection of black history books. Rend ing about black history is leisure reeting for him. He is a member of the Book of the Month Chib and the Barnes-Noble Book Club. “The rare black history books, I get from the Afro- > Caribbean Book Club lo cated in Charlotte.” ‘One day I’d like to own the largest collection of Mack history books/’ Daw kins revealed. His favorite book is ‘‘Before the May flower,” by Lerooe Ben nett, and his favorite story is about Harriet Tubtpan, also written by Bennett. . The Dawkins’ have one son, Rosatnuel, III, and they have already pledged to teach him history with no deletion of blacks’ par ticipation. Dawkins’ personal role in black history, especially In Charlotte, is already taking hold. He has moved his medical practice to the heart of the Charlotte Mack community on Beat ties Ford Road. The new site is the Northwest Me dical Surgical Associates Building. Other doctors housed in the new medical center are Francis (Mm and Victor Olowofuyeku, both of Ni geria. According to Dawkins, the medical cen- . ter will eventually include a pharmacy and other me*.; , dically oriented services.
