Johnson C. Smith will not be riding in the “expected to win” seat when the 39th CIAA Basketball Tournament opens in the Nor folk Scope Wednesday afternoon. Nor will the Golden Bulls be perched among the teams projected to create some problems for the teams that should win the biggest t*e in black college basketball. That’s good! Whv? Because the low rating gives Bob Moore and his team an opportunity to enter the big Mmble derby relaxed and loose. That, in ggt opinion, is all the Johnson C. Smith BWetes need to do to return to winning Sagging badly in fifth place among the seven Southern Division teams, the Bulls are much better than their 10-14 overalll record indicates. They are 3-4 in league play. Sin?e it is felf iri'TrifofmSd^TrctesntTat Moore Warriors can play with any team in the CIAA, perhaps a little more motiva tion, a bit more dedication and a lot more hustle can riiore than make up the differ ence between winning and losing. If the Golden Bulls are to surprise the forecasters, who say they are not a serious contender for this year’s tournament title, they’re going to have to regain their confidence in themselves, sharpen their shooting aim, and brush up on their defense. Prior to losing to Hampton in Virginia Monday night, the Herd was hitting with only 44 percent of their floor shots and only 65 percent of their free throws found their - way through the hoops. The SOS signs dictate practice is needed in these vital areas. Team leader Roosevelt McGruder, the guy who was targeted for board domin ation, needs to return to the flow of action. His 8.3 rebound'average is far below his par performance. Phil Smith, who has grabbed «ily 6.5 caroms per game, is not helping out uch. . - .\ • An analysis of the Bulls’ weekly statistics sheet reveals Moore needs more balance scoring to improve his team’s chances. Only three Smith athletes were shooting above double figures in games played through February 8. McGruder was leading with a lofty 21.5 average, but Phil Smith and Dante Johnson were trailing badly, with only 11.8 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. . .NEITHER HERE NOR THERE. Reports that the City of Charlotte Parks and Recreations Department is planning to build a new golf course at the York Road landfill site are good news. However, it should be pointed out that the citizens of Charlotte, especially the black golfers, are not going to be supportive of a municipal course unless it is first class. A “first class” facility would more than pay for itself. To build a golf course similar to Bonnie Brae would be a waste of taxpayers’ money. That’s my opinion! Smith women’s basketball team (14-10) will open play in the CIAA Women’s Tourna ment against St. Paul’s Thursday, February 16, at the Norfolk State Spartan Arena. Smith defeated the Lady Tigers (3-14) by a 72-62 score in Charlotte in Jan uarv Steve Joyner’s team fin ished in second place in the CIAA Southern Division for the third straight year as Shaw, took the title away from defending champions, Fayetteville State. “We feel pretty good about our chances in the tournament,” reflected "Jbynur. “flight now,..our defensive play is carrying us while our scoring has been erratic. The Norfolk State hosts are indicating that they expect crowds of over 5,000 for each ses sion,” pointed out Joyner. “Usually, the pressure of a tournament will bring down a team’s shooting percentage so our defen sive play may prove a big factor for us.” If the women’s offense does gel all at once, Joy ner will have a variety of effective weapons. Cassan dra Howell and Caryl Har din are difficult to stop inside when both are on their games. Opponent de fenses have concentrated on denying the pass in side. Smith dan counter with Odelia Johns’ outside jumper. The major ele ment binding the offense together has been the point play of senior guard Sonya Dalton whose six assists per game and defensive play has contributed a major role to back-to-back winninfl seasons The men will wrap up the regular season by hosting Southern Division leader St. Augustine’s (21-3) Thursday and Fayetteville State on Saturday. With powers St. Augustine's, Virginia^ Union and Norfolk State being split into two brack ets, a loss might throw the Golden Bulls into the bracket with two powers waiting. “We feel we’ve proved that we’re capable of beat ing anyone in the CIAA on a given day,’’ remarked re serve Stephone .Parby, “but it sure would'be nice to avoid meeting some of those teams in the first round.” The advice filtering down from the CIAA officials in Virginia is to make sure LET'S TALK MONEY Mildred Dwiggins Swift It’s time that black people talk about money. We work to earn it and rush to spend it. Yet how much do we own of the money we make? A recent article in “The National Leader” cited a black gross income of $150 billion annually. That reportedly is the tenth largest income of any people on this planet. However, what becomes of that money was not considered to be in our best interests. Virtually every black person has some dollar power. It may be a lot or a little, but the fact that it is capital and-or cash represents power. And this dollar power can translate into more financial self determination in an American economy which measures nearly every index on a dollar value. It’s not the amount of money we make that matters as much as how we manage our money. -The money decisions of black people must confront these times of uncertain inflation rates, new tax laws and social security revisions. As the changes take place, our financial outlooks must seek different options. One person with whom you can talk to learn about money options is myself, a professional financial planner. An individualized approach is used to find ways of maximizing more of the dollars that come into our possession.
