The candidate, who is a Democrat seeking the seat being vacated by Rep. Jim Martin, sai d he was “thrilled” about the con cert. “Joe is a very well known and internationally re spected musician, and just having him here is an _bonor/’ Martin said. “His performing to benefit our campaign Is truly a special gesture." Robinson volunteered his services for the benefit out of what he said was "a belief in D.G. and his abili ties." “I’ve known D.G. for some time, and his cre dentials are quite impres sive,” Robinson said. "I'd like to help him in any way I can." A native North Carolin ian, Robinson’s musical career has been impres sive. He performed as the principal oboist with the Atlanta Symphony for six years Dei ore joining me New York Philharmonic in 1978, anti has also parti cipated in the Marlboro, Blossom, Berkshire and Grand Teton festivals. McMillen, who has worked with four other vo lunteers for two months in preparation for the event, said the variety of music should create “a different kind of concert experi ence.” “I think it will be a tre mendous success,” she said. “The combination of different types of music will make for a strong concert that will be upbeat and fun." Over 1,200 invitations went out on February 24 for the event, which is being held in conjunction with a champagne dinner buffet for special guests at the home of Hugh L. McColi, Jr., Chairman of the Board of NCNB and co-chair of Martin’s campaign finance committee Robinson is no stranger to benefit concerts. Last spring, while at Davidson College to receive an honorary doctorate, he or ganized a benefit event that raised $350,000 for student musicians there. Robinson currently teaches at the Manhattan School of Music in New ■ York, where he lives with his wife, Mary Kathryn, and two daughters, Katie and Jody. His program for the con cert will include Tele mann’s “Sonata in G Minor for Oboe and Piano,” Britten’s “Six Metamor phoses After Ovid for Oboe Solo,” and Saint Saens' "Sonata for Oboe and Piano."
