Williams has represent ed the 54th Georgia House District (Demo-DeKalb Cty. l for 10 years. From the Well of the House on the last day of the 1984session, Williams said, “I will not be returning (to the House)." Williams re presents that portion of At lanta that is in DeKalb County, a poor to middle class neighborhood. By not making his im mediate political plans known, there was much room for speculation. Will iams, however, said he would make a decision soon concerning his political future. He said, “I've narrowed it down to three choices: I’ll either run for Lt. Governor of Georgia (that is, if Zell Miller doesn’t run for re-election), State Labor Commissioner, or for the 5th U.S. Con gressional District Seat formerly held by Andy Young." Many political observers believe Williams will in deed go for the 5th Dis trict seat, which is cur rently held by Wyche Fowler. Williams has put together a Blue-Ribbon “Think Tank” advisory group. Committee’s NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc (LDF) April 4 in Charlotte, many will only see the beautifully de corated tables and smell the appetizing aroma of the meal. What guests will probably not be cognizant of is the time and dedication it took to coordinate the fund raising affair for the LDF. There are many local vo lunteers on such commit tees as letter writing, finance, arrangement and programming. But there must always be leaders to pull the event together North Carolina's co-chair persons are Mr. and Mrs. Zoel Hargrave of Char lotte. As co-chairpersons of the North Carolina LDF since 1979, their main du ties entail soliciting funds for the various programs of the LDF. For 43 years LDF at torneys have won hun dreds of court decisions to desegregate public educa tion; to gain equal access to employment opportun ities, housing, voting rights and health care Not only blacks, but other racial minorities and wo men have benefited as well. The LDF also se cures even-handed treat ment in the administra tion of criminal justice, and administers two national School. He also received his Master's at Colgate. After attending the Uni versity of Rochester where he received his Master of Arts degree, Anderson was given the Doctor of Divini ty degree by Friendship. Mayfield Memorial ac cepted Rev. Diggs as its pastor after he preached at the church's first revival services. The church is named after Rev. P. M. Mayfield, who had pre viously assisted in increas ing the membership at St Paul Baptist Church from 35 payple to 1,000 in a short period of time. The church is in the pro cess of erecting <0 homing units for the elderly and handicapped citizens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg See MayfleM Oe Page 5A scholarship and fellowship aid programs and produces internships for law stu dents throughout the year and during the summer. “Two of the local ac complishments involving LDF were class action suits , One, a discrimina tion suit against Cannon Mills, the plaintiffs pre vailed two years ago and won back pay There was another discrimination suit against the U.S. Postal Service which began about nine years ago and was settled last October. The plaintiffs were granted $1.6 million as a result of the intercession of LDF,” Mr Hargrave explained “Here is one organiza tion to help minorities, blacks and women in fact it’s the only organization of this kind I know of," he continued. In addition to court battles involving the legal and constitutional rights of individuals, LDF also prepares youth for the roles of lawyers “This is one reason why we would like organizations, church es and other groups to sponsor young people and allow them to attend the dinner," Mrs Hargrave commented. A reception at 5:45 p.m. is planned; dinner at 7 pm. and a program will follow. “The program will be enjoyed by all,” she stated. A single ticket is $30; one table, seating eight id $250; while a sponsor for the dinner will pay $100 for two tickets (which also in cludes listing your name in the program as a sponsor). The three-day event, sponsored by the National Parents Resource Institute °n Drug ^Education (PRIDE), Georgia StatiT University, the Lions Club International and the Na tional Institute on Drug Abuse will feature a dual program for youth and adults aimed at increasing their knowledge about the harmful effects of drugs on youth. Speakers and panel lead ers will include interna tionally recognized scienti fic and medical experts in addition to parent and community leaders, educa tors, health professionals and law enforcement of ficials from throughout the United States and many foreign countries. This year, a Young Peo ple's Conference will ga ther to share ideas, hopes and motivation in finding solutions for a drug-free existence, according to conference organizer Dr. Thomas Gleaton of Georgia State University. Partici pating in this event will be “Love Boat” star Jill Whelan and football pro Raymond Chester, former ly with the Los Angeles Raiders. Another highlight of the conference will be the screening of an upcoming PBS documentary pro duced by the Jacques Cousteau Society on cocaine trafficking in the Amazon. Jean Michel Cousteau will be on hand to discuss the film Some of the topics to be covered in workshop ses sions will include mariju ana and its effect on re production; drug crops and tne eco-system; America’s drug policy; the impact of drugs on education; the im pact of drugs on certain foreign countries; 800 COCAINE, a national co caine problem hotline and techniques parents can use to deal with drug pro blems among Children and their peers Legislation and law en forcement issues related to drug trafficking and abuse will be discussed lb depth during panel sessions and speeches on Saturday, March 24.
