Charles Newton Jertdns and Mrs. Lillie McNeety Jenkins, was barn an May IX, 1907 in Charlotte, N.C. He transcended from the “living church” into the church triumphant” -on March 9.19M. . His public school educa tion was received at Fair view Btomeatary and S* cood Ward High He earned Ms Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Di vinity degrees from John son & Smith University and Ms Master of Theo logy degree from Prince ton Theological Seminary in Princeton, N.J. He was also awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree by his Al ma Mater, Johnson C. Smith University. Dr. Jenkins was ordained to the ministry in 1981 and was given the charge by his father who was, at the time, pastor of Brandon —Presbyterian Church (now C. N. Jenkins Memorial). His first position was Sun day School Missionary with the Board of Nation al Missions in Cape Pear Presbytery. In 1984, he ac cepted the call to Iwnn* the pastor of Shiloh Pres byterian Church in Knox ville, TN. While there, be ••rvedhsModerator* the Synod of Blue Ridas. In 1948, he enlisted in the Army as a Chaplain. En tering as a First Lieuten ant, he rose to the rank of Major and was bouspaMy discharged -faj 1945. He * ■erved in North Africa, Italy and was awarded a Silver Star medal for gallantry above and be yond the line of duty. During 1945-48, he served the Witherspoon Presby terian Church in Prince ton, NJ. Following this pas torate, he became a “Uni versity Pastor” to Presby terian students in Southern colleges. - . ... ■ ;V Dr. Jenkins accepted a call from Catawba Presby tery in 1961 to organize a new Presbyterian Church and in January, 1962, the Statesville Avenue Pres byterian Church came into existence. It was there that he spent some of the most satisfying years of his min istry. He retired from this pastorate in Decem ber, 1974. In organizing Statesville Avenue Presbyterian Church, Dr. Jenkins fol lowed in the footsteps of his father, Rev. C. N. Jenkins, who founded Brandon Presbyterian Church. His services to the king dom of God, however, did not end with his retirement for be remained actively involved in the spiritual life ana acuviaee of the Pres bytery. He served as Moderator of Brandon, Pint United, Catawba, Grier Heights and Third Street Presbyterian Churches and was Pastor Emeritus of the States ville Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was married for 45 yean to his teenage sweet heart, Lona, who preceded him in death in lf74. Dr. Thomas A. Jenkins is survived by a daughter, Mrs Gwendolyn J. Howell; a granddaughter, Mrs. Cheryl H. Pay lor; a grand son, Jack D. Howell, Jr.; a grandson-in-law, Larry C. Pay lor, three sisters; Mrs. Johneie J. Yongue, Mn. Lillian J. Shute, and Mrs Carey J. Hines; three niecee: Mn. Jotaeie Y. Dense, Mn. Gloria Mc Clure, and Mn. Valerie S. Harkey; four nephews Matthew Shute, Jr'., Charles Shute, Milton Yongue aad Joseph Yongue; two brothers in lew: Matthew Shute, 0r„ aad Ruben Hinee; a Mater in-law. Mn.
