Thomas Moore Conference speaker Moore To Qose Gmfcraioe Wfli Musical Notes * Thomas Moore will close the Eleventh Annual Train ing Conference of the Na tional Head Start Associa tion April 8 in Kansas City, with a musical keynote. It you have ever heard Moore sing, you know that he is not wasting his su preme talent. He is putting to use the knokwledge he has gained from his B.A. in Voice from the Manhat tan School of Music (with a specialty in opera). But there is more to Moore’s presentations that simply a beautiful voice. He has spoken nationally combining his music with a special message. • “I corhblne my speech ' with my music,” Moore explained. “I talk about talent development and self-esteem. We are all talented and without self esteem, a child can end up in crime dr dropping out of school instead of develop- ' ing his-her talents.” Moore has worked with the Head Start on the na tional level sharing key note sessions with Tony Brown, Leon Sullivan, Ju lian Bond and others. His philosophy is not only based upon children, how ever. “One reason why I like the Head Start pro gram is because it in volves the parents as well. Head Start is the only organization for young children which includes pa rents in its philosophy and involvement. I’ve been to conferences where more than 1,000 parents participated. ” ,JJoore is concerned about what the youth, senior citizens and the po pulation in general are saying. “The need in our communities is for us to be more concerned with what others are saying and being fair to others. There are possibilities in every community but they stop when we criticize. We need to hear what others have to say.” Moore has authored a book, “The Saturday Notebook,” a diary lor children and parents to use together to increase com munication skills. He also has five albums and three singles of recordings for children. Since his involvement with Head Start (which was launched in 1965), he has supported the organ ization in its efforts against poverty. Head Start is de signed to help economic ally disadvantaged three to five year olds achieve their full potential, Over 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the Na tional Head Start Associa tion’s 11th Annual Train ing Conference. Also during April, the Social Service Compon ent of the local Beth lehem Center Project Head Start will be taking ap plications for the 1984-85 program year.
