“yes” or “no” tor a pu
blic building bond. The
$32.7 million bond will fund
construction of a 313,000
square foot government
center to house City and
County Services and of
fices, and a 780-space
parking deck. The building
site is the block bordered
by Third, Fourth, Alex
ander and Davidson
Streets. The parking deck
site is the block bordered
by Third, Fouth, David
son, and Caldwell Streets.
The Mayor’s City Office
Space Study Committee, a
citizens’ committee ap
pointed in August, 1982,
determined that the City
could saved $24 million
over the next 30 years by
building its own office
space rather than continu
ing to lease. The City cur
rently pays approximately
$1 million annually to lease
space for City offices that
would be housed in the new
center.
The City-County govern
ment center will centralize
most local government ad
ministrative offices in one
building for the first time.
The features of the center
include a meetimg cham
ber for the City Council and
County Commission with
adequate seating for neigh
borhood groups and other
