G&®en Sajis She Hasn’t Strayed From “Matters At Hand” By Karen Parker Paat 8taff Writer As many elected officials seek another term in their present office or campaign for different kind of go vernment representation, their constituents often accuse them of neglecting their present responsibili ties. County Commissioner Susan Green is working toward U.S. Congress, but she makes .it dear, she hasn’t strayed from mat ters at.hand as a com missioner. Green outlined several projects in which she has recently been involved. She refers to the projects as accomplishments. “I’ve introduced or been a part of the team that put these accomplishments in effect,” Green pointed out. She was speaking of ap pointments such as the first Mack as assistant county manager, and a black as director of the Business Opportunity Network (BON). Joe Bradshaw of ►Orange County will take over as assistant county manager in June; while Jim Richardson is present ly developing BON, a joint project of the dty, county and the Chamber of Commerce. Green stated the Min ority Women’s Busi ness Enterprise (MWBE) is in farce assuring minor ities and women get go vernment contracts. Other projects which Green has seen initiated through county commission is the training opportunity and upward mobility program. Susan Green .9th District candidate “I authored this program which allows county em ployees to train with some one in higher (county) jobs for six months,” Green confirmed. She mentioned the program prevents county employees from be ing stuck in a job with little opportunity for advance ment Green, who supports in stituting district represen tation in Mecklenburg County, is also working for the same kind of pro vision in nearby Iredell County. Tryon St. STARNES ££ a . . “I’m working with Ire dell County’s Political Ac tion Coalition to help them get district representation in Statesville,” Green ac knowledged. She thinks the coalition was wise to turn the issue into a court case. According to Green, dis trict representation on the city and county level means more diverse elect ed officials, a less expen sive campaign and better government decisions. The county commission er and congressional can>J didate has worked to im plement several human service provisions as well. They include a five-day-a week hot lunch for elderly residents, home health care nursing so the elderly don’t have to be institu tionalized, and a program known as CHORE. This program provides assist ants who can take elderly or disabled people shop ping, to the doctor, etc., so they can continue living in their homes.
