Members Pool Resources I- -- ‘ • v* • i - To Aid Tornado Victims ^Various church members and civic and social organ ization members from Charlotte have pooled re sources to aid the many victims of the recent tor nado which struck North ^Carolina. Much of the devasta tion occurred in Red Springs, N.C. ^Members of First May field Manorial Baptist ^Gfeurch, Las Amigas, Sig £ul Gamma Rho Sorority and Los Bravos Club either visited or sent donations to many in financial need. The ones who took time out to visit Red Springs took money, clothing, shoes, lin en and numerous house hold items and distributed them personally. Las Amigas was joined by the Gastonia chapter of the club. Mayfield spon sored a bus to Red Springs apd invited other church members to add continuous spiritual support as well as materialistic assistance. ..In the city of Red Springs trees were uprooted, roofs ►'torn from houses, botani cal gardens totally uproot ed and buildings demo lished. There was also evidence of a great clean up effort. It was a frightening experience for me,” re ported Barbara Atwater, president of the Chariot te Meckienburg chapter. “I did not see the worst part - it is a scene that is non descriptive. One must see it in order to believe it. Ikying to understand the depth of it, you must say that miracles really do SPjPPeu ” Other members accom panying Ms. Atwater from the Las Amigas chapter included Dora Mason, founder, and Johnsie Young. Outstanding mem ber Annette Cowan, presi dent of the Gastonia chap ter, and Martha Macafee also visited Red Springs. The couple has two children: Gary B. Blocker and Martha Lamp kin; 11 grandchildren; about 20 great grands and a few great, great grand children. They are truly a couple representing God’s eternal love. . .Mr. and Mrs. John Gray of Charlotte recently tra velled to Asheville to see their niece, Patricia Carson Caple appear in the pro duction of “In My Father’s House.” The players were excellent and it was an effective play,” Mrs. Gray commented. . The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will present an honorary degree to world-renowned actor James Earl Jones. Jones will receive a Doctor of Letters. You may remember James Earl Jones in “The Great White Hope.” He has also appeared in the title roles in “Othello” and “King Lear,” “Roots-The Second Generation.” He earned the Broadway Tony Award in addition to re ceiving Oscar and Emmy nominations. Jones’ voice has become almost universally known as Darth Vader of the “Star Wars” film trilogy. His theatrical roots go back to high school when he forced himself to become involved in debating activities to Election ’84 To Air Taped interviews with the Republican and Demo cratic candidates in the May 8 primary race for the 9th U.S. Congressional District and the Mecklen burg Board of County Com mission, will be broadcast over three nights on WTVI, Channel 42f The programs are part of the Public Television station’s “Election ’84’’ coverage. “Election ’84” will spot light the Republican candi dates for the Mecklenburg Board of County Com mission at 10 p.m. on Tues day, May 1. The Democra tic candidates will be fea tured on Wednesday, May 2, also at 10 p.m. The two 60-minute pro grams will be hosted by Jerry Hancock and Kathy Doherty. “Election ’84” continues on Friday, May 4, with the broadcast of taped inter views with Republican candidates for the 9th Con gressional District at 10 p.m. The Democratic can didates will be spotlighted at 10:30 p.m. Jim Morrill will join Jerry Hancock for the questioning. Vat# May I, 19M »»/»» n* —» Pact Hmrrr Wry overcome a stammering problem. —. .Do you remember Jen nifer Payne, the 36 year old Charlottean who is run ning from Charlotte to New York in order to raise money for the Sickle Cell Foundation research? She will be greeted in 20 towns by members of Del ta Sigma Theta Sorority. A recent press release sent out by the sorority stated that Mrs. Payne is a Delta and will run approximate ly 550 miles. The Delta’s national pre sident, Hortense G. Cana dy, stated recently, “I have arranged for a check from Delta’s executive commit tee to sickle cell research to be presented to Jenni fer on her arrival in New York City. We commend her efforts to heighten the visibility of this disease, which particularly afflicts blacks in this country.” Mrs. Payn«^should arrive at her destination May 5. A press conference will be held that day at the Sickle Cell Anemia Association in New York. Both Las Amigas and the Chi Eta Phi Sorority mem bers have displayed con cern for the community.
