Poet Reader^Recommends D.G. Martin For Congress-_
Dear Sir:
On Tuesday, May 8,
voters will clamor to the
polls to elect Party can
didates for the various
county, state and U.S.
congressional offices.
Tuesday will be the North
Carolina primaries.
Primaries as you pro
bably know, are the poli
tical playoffs where can
didates belonging to the
same conference (poltical
party) must face each
. other to determine who will
make it to the finals
(November elections}, xne
finals will pit the best from
the Republican Party
against the best from the
Democratic Party* The
winners will not receive
championship rings nor
will they legally make the
mega-bucks that other
playoffs offer. TO the win
ner goes the right to help
mold our future.
Because of the spoils at
stake, these playoffs are by
far the most important for
us, the citiziens of this
country. It is one playoff
that we cannot afford to be
just spectators. It is a must
that we participate.
Some of the key players
in this playoff are those
starting position for the 9th
"District in the, U.S. Con
gress. The Democratic
team will field three su
perstars for the position.
They are Susan Green, D.
G. Martin, and Ben Tison:
The Republicans will coun
ter with two superstars of
their own in Carl Horn and
Alex McMmillan.
For you and me this
position is quite critical.
The final MVP for this po
sition will be our link to
what goes oft in Washing
ton. The chosen one will
represent lis to the rest of
the nation and the rest of'
the world. With the possi
bility of World destruction
only a fingertip away, it
becomes imperative that I
our MVP be a person who
will bst$n to what we have
to say. More importantly,
this person must transform
our input into solutions to
the issues facing us as a
nation. Ine position re
quires an individual with
integrity, intelligence,
commitment and sensitivi
ty. The position requires
D.G. Martin.
D.G.’s track record as a
person, not a politician,
clearly makes his qualifi
cations for the Congress
obvious. His leadership
ability has been demon
strated in the .Muck com
munity since the early

Knox 8 Commitment To .
Equality Of Opportunity
*
Dear Friend :
Recently I received in
the mail an anonymous
packet of information de
signed to call into question
—tbs integrity and commit
ment to equality of oppor
tunity of Eddie Knox.
This a blatant attempt to
undermine support for
Eddie within the black
community. Eddie Knox
has been in politics for a
good part of his adult life.
Like most of America, over
the years, his views on civil
rights issues have matured
and become more liberal
Today, Eddie Knox is a
subscribing Life Member
of the NAACP. While
Mayor of Charlotte, Eddie
appointed men and women
with outstanding civil
rights records, to boards
and commissions; he
worked hard to improve
Job opportunities for dis
advantaged youth; helped
black colleges; has been
out front on affirmative
action; supported Fab
Housing and minority
business enterprise pro
grams. Eddie is the only
candidate who, when in a
positjpn to appoint people,
gave nearly 40 percent of
Ms appointments to minor
ities. <■-&
Tile Knox record speaks
for itself.
To know a politician yon
have to look at aH of Ms
record, not just selective
pieces of it The authors of
die anonymous informa
tion kits are being selective
to the point of distorting
reality.
Yes, it is true that in the
wake of the attempted as
sassination of Governor
George Wallace, Senator
Knox co-sponsored,
with 30 others, a resolu
tion on Governor Wadace
that had the substance of a
get wed card. So what? It is
also true that during Ox
heat of the 1979 primary
for the Democratic nom
inee for mayor, Eddie and
Harvey Gantt did exchange
words over the meaning of
some of both skies' adver
tising. However, in 190
Eddie actively supported
Harvey’s bid to become
Charlotte’s first black
mayor. Today, Mayor
Gantt is strong and vocal
supporter of the Knox can
didacy for Governor.

organize legal help for the
poor when (federal funds
'were cutback. It was D.G.
and-hislovely wife Harriet
who open their doors and
their hearts to Thomas
Moore when he moved
back to Charlotte and had
no where to live. It was
D.G. who remained a mem
ber at Seigle Ave. Pres
byterian Chuch even after
the church went through ao
transformation from being0
an all-white church JUS a
predominantly black
church;
It was D.G. who serves
on the Board of Visitors,
NX. Central Law School* It
was D.G . who served on the '
Board of Managers of.;
McCrorey Branch YMCA.
This list of service,
commitment and leader
ship occurred during a
time when it was not po
pular to help Mack peo
ple or poor people. It was
not done for political ex
pediency or favors. This
service spans over 15
years. D.G. was there when V
the black community
needed him. Where wifl we
be now that be needs ns?
I happen to consider my
seif lucky because I know
D.G. and Harriet. Thfcy do
what they do because they
believe in what they do. It
is a family commitment to
do what they feel is right.
There is no doubt in my
mind that the MVP for U.S.
Congress shodld be D.G.
But I can only cast one
vote. Before you cast your
vote, you deserve to do
yourself a favor l*y' re
viewing the records of the
candidates. Keep in mind
while you are reviewing
each candidate why they do
what they do. Is it self
esteem? Is it political as
pirations? Is it political
favors? After doing this,
then vote your conscious.
You deserve to do yourself
this favor. The 9th District
deserves K. Most impor
tantly, D.G. deserves it.
