Russell .Guest speaker Barber-Scoria Plans 117th Commencement Students, visiting pa rents and friends, faculty, staff and guest dignitaries will bring the Barber Scotia campus alive on Sunday, May 13, when the 117th commencement exer cises get underway in the college convocation center at 10 a.m. Guest speaker will be the articulate, substantive, and thought-provoking Pa tricia A. Russell, attorney at-law and public speaker —foi San Antonio, Texas. Other special guests at the exercises will include members of the college’s board of trustees. Bachelor degrees will be awarded to 50 graduate seniors in ten areas; socio logy, history, mathemat ics, computer-science mathematics, business ad ministration, secretarial administration, elemen tary education, secondary education, medical tech noliogy, and biology. The 117th commence ment exercises are special to the BSC campus, in that it marks the first grad uating class of Virgin Is land students enrolled at the institution. A host of family and friends of these graduating seniors will be traveling from the Virgin Islands to witness this occasion. * Russell, the commence ment speaker, is a grad uate of Howard University School of Law and Ken tucky Stale Ulllvmsilj.— President of Patricia Rus sel Consultants, this Na tional Elk’s Oratorical awardee has appeared na. tionally as keynote speaker for numerous institutions, organizations and asso ciations. M*v.y-,v‘ Parker Says Younsr Uemocrats Open To Everyone By Karen Parker Poat Staff Writer The members of the Charlotte Chapter of the Young Democrats will pre sent'to Mecklenburg Coun ty its first black vice pre sident, at the annual In stallation Banquet, May 19 at 7 p.m. Though the organization has three vice presidents Michael Parker assumed the duties of first vice earlier this month. He ex plained he will act as pre sident in the absence of the organization’s leader. Parker oversees projects and assures programs and events operate smoothly. _ "I think my position as ~~ftrst vice president will make more people realize Young Democrats is open to everyone,” Parker noted. He has been a mem ber of the politically ori ented group for two years, and served as treasurer last year. Stating he has no “de fined political ambitions,’■* Parker informed he be came a member of Young Democrats after working on a senatorial campaign. “While working on the campaign I really enjoyed learning about behind the-scene politics,” Parker stated. "A friend encour aged me to join Young Democrats." When Parker joined the organization, he became noticeably active. He men tioned how he spent about six months working on se veral projects within Young Democrats. At the next election he was no minated and elected trea surer. “I’d like to see the Young Denocrats as the impetus to work with other organi zations with similar inter ests,” Parker stated. Other organizations in the area which associate with poli tics are effective. How ever, he'd like to see an even greater impact occur through a unified effort of all the organizations Parker is also looking forward to blacks partici pating in the organization as well as an increase of 'dedicated young people;— "Our members are 18-35 years old,” Parker ex pressed. “I want to see this age range remain inter ested in politics and how it Michael Parker .First vice president works. Parker stressed some of the 450 members through out the Mecklenburg Coun ty who are members of Young Democrats didn't have political knowledge. “The members learn the political process by at tending meetings~anff~IIF~ tening to our speakers," he continued. According to Parker, the organization doesn’t en dorse Democratic candi dates before the primary. “Once the Democratic can didate for 9th District Con gress has been selected, I'm sure we will work with that candidate's cam paign," Parker assured.
