Tamara Elizabeth Hou ston, the daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Sammie L. Houston Sr., is one indi vidual who has taken the commitment of study to heart. A dedicated student, - little Ms. Houston will be one of the youngest ever to perform a solo piano re cital under the guidance of teacher-mentor Clara_ Jones. The recital will be held Saturday, June 2, at First Baptist Church, 1801 Oaklawn Ave., at 6 p.m. Ms. Houston, a 12 year old sixth grader at Bar ringer Elementary School, finds playing the piano exhilarating. “It is both relaxing and fun,” she commented. l amara has been under my instruction since 1990,” Mrs. Jones stated. “She has an excellent memory, fine expression and lots of life,” Mrs.. Jones con tinued. “Each year in the national or International Piano Playing Auditions, Tamara has scored supe rior ratings - the highest possible.” This year Ms. Houston entered the International competitions. She memor ized 15 pieces including selections like the Russian Dance and Valse Noble by Schubert. 7 Mrs. Jones confided that -- Cheryl A. She graduated with a 3.2 average, quali fying her as a cum laude graduate. She was affili ated with the Sigma Tau Delta National English Honor Society and the Pi Delta Tau Education Honor Society. borne of her honors in clude being named a Duke Scholarship recipient, an Outstanding Young Woman of America and one of the Who’s Who Among Stu dents in America. TAMARA HOUSTON Musical Wiz Tamara is an excellent worker. “She is one of the ' first sixth graders to give a solo recital. From the very beginning she has been a willing and hard worker.’’ Ms. Houston is one of two sixth graders to be fea tured in solo'recitals next month. Ms. Houston is an achiever in school as well as at the piano. On the achievement test she scored 99. Her ambition is to work with computers and become a piano artist. She .is also a member ot the safety patrol at Bar ringer Elementary School, plays the flute in the band, is a teen member for the fire safety bowl sponsored by the fire academy and attends New Bethlehem FBH Church where Rev. J. R. Caldwell pastors.- At church Ms. Houston sings in the Youth Choir and the Combined Choir. She was the first place winner in the Book Fair Poster contest and re ceived the Sportsmanship Award from Pinewood Elementary School. Ms. Houston has also received trophies in soft ball, Bible memorization contests; and certificates in Bible courses as well as for safety patrol and gen eral music. She has two brothers, Sammie Jr. and Michael.
