Houston was respon eJBe for raising money for scholarships. Each year the local chap ter of IB POE sponsors a W.C. Houston Fez, an ora torical contest fdr high school students. On each level that a student com petes, local, regional, statewide or national, if he is a successful contestant' be-she receives a monetary award. The top winner receives a $1500 scholar ship,--—_ Among her other respon sibilities in the organiza tion ensuring that young people who desired to go to school was high on her list of priorities. Because of her devotion to this cause Mrs. Houston «i|. i was recently awarded a plaque of appreciation for U yean of faithful and dedicated service to the education department of the N.C. State Association of the IB POE of the World. This award Is only one of many that Mn. Houston has earned thoughout her affiliation with the IB POE She has held the honor of being the past state presi dent ss well as a past granddaughter ruler. Dr. Epps, presi dent of the city’s Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Society, awarded the organization’s annual *1,000 scholarship to JCSU graduate Larr Hearne, now studying at Meharry Medical School.
